Bioshock steals from other games!
Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Bioshock steals from other games!
lol. i just made a screenshot:

the crowbar looks like the one in opposiong force.

also this rifle looks like the one in call of duty. much WWII style.
Yes, that is what a pipe wrench looks like :)
On a similar note, I spotted that the footballers in Fifa 2008 look very similar to the footballers in PES 2007, even down to wearing shorts, socks and football boots. Coincidence? I think not!
The gun looks like a Thompson with a drum magazine.
I don't think Half-Life invented the monkey wrench.
lol ;D
Don't forget that they stole from Pipe Dream for the hacking game ;)
And the blood is RED?!?!
WTF? I seen red blood in soooo many games, frickin' copy cats!
Your idea is bad and you should feel bad.
This thread is full of lose.
why is the wrench the default h2h weapon for so many games.
Didnt system shock 2 have a wrench?
Maybe because it happens to be heavy and capable of causing blunt-force trauma.
I like baseball bats, can get a quicker swing out of them imo than you can with one hand with a wrench.
strictly it's not hand to hand combat if you are holding a wrench. The interesting thing about when someone holds a weapon is they tend to focus on it too much and thus forget they have another hand (unless it's a two handed weapon) and a head (and mouth) and two feet (and knees and elbows and shoulders and forearms and shins and even belly!). Also they have to swing it (unless it's a knife and they use a stabbing motion) which is slow and given away by their body movement, so it can be intercepted. You are better off with a long weapon to keep the attacker at bay unless you can't use it properly of course or the enviroment is cramped...Of course there are ways to disarm weilders of long pole like weapons too...best weapon (not firing) would be a light saber ... but they don't exist. However, I've seen videos of Koreans taking out someone who is trying to draw a gun and shoot them from easily 5+ metres away - you need the gun in a firing position at all times (like in FPS games) and should never get within 3-5m of an attacker because they can intercept if properly trained - so many people make that mistake in movies and of course they get taken out by "Steven Seagal" or someone, or otherwise I'm just yelling "the gun is 6 inches from you, just move out of the way and grab it". If you think you can't move faster than a gun, then think again, the human reaction time is around 180ms, so it takes that long for the gun weilder to think "sh*t, they move, I'd better fire". That's 1/5th of a second and you can move pretty far in that time period, although in fact you really don't need to move very far at all to defend yourself.
Hope you have found this bulletin useful.
whatever happened to the lead pipe, it feels neglected
Sod the lead pipe, the weapon of choice in my opinion is the good old... Frying pan!!!
Women across the nation swear by it! :D
Dabz
Why is it called "monkey" wrench in english?
i feel very mad :D
but funny tho, in which case games are similar... this movie above's just great :D
"Why is it called "monkey" wrench in english?"
They are used for fitting screwed iron pipes, and you have to swing on them like a monkey.
In England they are also called Stilsons (sometime stillies), Ridgeds, Dogs (cos they can be a dog to use)
You swing it like a monkey in real?
"You swing it like a monkey in real?"
Only if it a horizontal pipe above your head and it wont bl**y move, does that give you the idea.
[EDIT]
I would like to point out that pipe fitting is my day job and is very stressful at times and the swearing above is very mild compared to the langauge I would normally use in such situations.
If i have someone swaering in mind because it doesn't open on a first try then yes... :O)
hey, no offence! jus wanted to hear what you say about that...
no serious blame to bioshock, the best FPS i played yet ;D
When Making Big Budget Games they tend to stick to the tried methods
NailBar this was the Hl favorite
Yes NailBar ( a CrowBar is a 4 to 6 foot pole with a tappered end ) Only thing with a NailBar is it isnt that good for breaking Stronger items ie Smashing of Crates lol they would have to be made of balsa wood
Now A monkey wrench has a similar shape to a club or hammer this could be used to smash crates more plausable in real enviroment progression and would cause more crushing damage to the human body
My Favourite has to be the Spades in HL:DOD god i loved
Setting up a spadematch with friends is excellent fun :)
I think the monkey wrench is the Daddy. It's interesting graphically and has a really good feeling of weight in Bioshock. Notable mention goes to Blood's pitch-fork. Quite enjoyable running the living dead through with one of those.
that would be very funny to play a game where you wield a frying pan
NailBar this was the Hl favorite
Now I've got Harry Hill singing "at the nailbar..nailbar..nailbar" going over in my head :P
those are common wrenches and guns...
HL = rox my sox
However, I've seen videos of Koreans taking out someone who is trying to draw a gun and shoot them from easily 5+ metres away
And it probably wasn't staged at all. Drawing a gun does not prevent you from moving.

sure some people would move, but not many, people don't always think logically, especially when "relying" on a weapon.

I think people who have guns in public and draw them with the intent of shooting someone, are going to step back, and start blasting. Martial Arts is not a realistic weapon in a gun fight. Ever. In 17 years of actively practicing various forms of Martial Arts, I have NEVER heard a verified story of someone unarmed defeating a man with a gun.

You obviously have never heard of the Bullet Proof Monk.
[edit]That's not all. There are some self help books out there that teach you all about positive thinking and happy thoughts. IMHO with the aid of these books you can find, as some have said on this forum, unlimited funding, become Bullet Proof, Become sword proof, gain infinite inner peace and acheve Aurora borealis in your kitchen.

How do you swing one of those?
In 17 years of actively practicing various forms of Martial Arts, I have NEVER heard a verified story of someone unarmed defeating a man with a gun.
One of the Aikido students I trained with was also a soldier of fortune (genuine) and was most recently doing anti-terrorist work in the UK and showed us some anti-gun techniques ... very effective and he's used them. He's in his 50s, deaf in one ear from a grenade blast and has shrapnel in is knees and various other injuries/scars etc - doesn't sound like a very easy job...
was most recently doing anti-terrorist work in the UK and showed us some anti-gun techniques ... very effective and he's used them.
What's his name? Does he have any verifiable credentials?
I've been to plenty of martial arts seminars, and while I realize there are plenty of techniques dealing with firearms, the evidence that they're actually effective in combat simply isn't there. An ex-marine buddy of mine is currently working as a bodyguard instructor in Africa, and his anti-gun technique is "shoot first", and if that fails "seek cover, return fire". The idea that you should engage someone who is wielding a firearm in hand-to-hand combat, is an idea prominent in countries which don't have guns - often spread by opportunistic Bullshido con artists.
What's his name?
I can't tell you his name...I know it but it's just not appropriate. His credential are himself (he is trustworthy), his house, his photos, his friends etc i.e. his history. Basically sure, you wouldn't run into a firefight waving your hands around but if someone was right next to you and pointed a gun at you and asked for your wallet or to turn around, I'm saying that they are vunerable - it's that simple.
I know a way you can test this theory. Make a trip down to broadwater farm where all the yardies and drug dealers are hanging around. Tell them you want to see whether or not you can disable one of them if they pulled a gun on you.
A few things will happen before you get to open your mouth though.
First, if you make it to where the overhead pass is, near the greenery, then I'll consider you quite skilled. You'll of course have to first defend yourself agaisn't the dope smoking youths who come up to you and tap your pockets. If your pockets don't jingle then you better expect to put your marshal arts skills to the test.
If you survive that and make it to the carpark under the building, I'll consider you so skilled in Martial arts that i would beleive you if you said you could levitate.
Now, upon getting to the Carpark, you'll with 100% certainty be approached by a yardie. When the yardie approaches you and asks you what you want, tell him that you're a fifth dan at fujitsu siemens kung fu and that you can disable a man with a gun when they are close to you.
If after you say that, everything goes black - well looks like your fujitsu got you knowhere.
If on the other hand you come out of that area without a scratch on you and not full of holes I will consider that proof that a trained marshal artsman can defend himself agaisnt a guy who has just pulled a gun with the intent to kill and rob you.
Remeber.. Wax on... wax off.
I just like to point out that I in no way think that you, FlameDuck and Grey, couldn't kick ass because Martial Arts is effective. I know I'd get my ass kicked if i fought any of you two but I'm being sarcy and funny about Martial arts VS a Gun because I simply can't see how any Martial Atrists reflexes are faster than some Gun weilding idiots trigger finger.
I can't tell you his name...I know it but it's just not appropriate.
Why? I'm sure he would appreciate the extra business. While I haven't trained for a few years, I still have lots of contacts who teach Krav Maga, Kyokushin and Vale Tudo, who would love to integrate effective firearms defense into their classes - particularly for police officers.
I simply can't see how any Martial Atrists reflexes are faster than some Gun weilding idiots trigger finger.
I certainly wouldn't want to be the one to prove it.
Tell them you want to see whether or not you can disable one of them if they pulled a gun on you.
But Aikido is the art of peace so I'm not into that.
I simply can't see how any Martial Atrists reflexes are faster than some Gun weilding idiots trigger finger.
I already explained about the human reaction time being the key factor here. For example we train where someone holds a knife to your throat (or back or front) and they have to stab forwards as soon as they sense you moving, and you have to move faster... When you first do it, you get it wrong and give too much away (luckily we start training with wooden knives) and you feel the knife press into you. Later, no matter how hard the partner tries to focus on you moving and then stab (partner is another black belt for example) you can still move quickly enough out of the way and then disarm them. We have to do this with a real knife for our black belt grading and 2nd dan etc.
Why?
Listen, I'm hardly gonna call him up and say can I post his name on a public forum in case someone wants to hire him, besides he's already hired in the UK. At the end of the day it's up to you whether you trust my information of not. I don't lie about stuff, if you think I do then that's your problem.
I certainly wouldn't want to be the one to prove it.
Me neither ... but it's possible. You know that Bruce Lee could punch quicker than the human reaction time right? So he could throw a punch and it would hit you in the face BEFORE you could move! You'd see it and your brain would think "sh*t" and fire off an impulse to move, then "whack", that would be lights out time (unless you had a thick skull ;-)).
My Big Daddy can beat up your Big Daddy.
Bruce Lee vs Big Daddy anyone?
