French, German, Spanish, Italian charsets

Hiya, I just wondered if some of you can help me build a list of non-"English" characters in your languages, specifically for French, German, Spanish, Italian. Thanks.

For reference the English characters are:

"AaBbCcDdEeFfGgHhIiJjKkLlMmNnOoPpQqRrSsTtUuVvWwXxYyZz"

For example, for German I have:

ÄäÖöÜüß

What about for the other languages and have I missed anything for German? (like is there a captial ß ?) thanks.

Hello Grey Alien. This is the charset for spanish (from spain, wich has some more characters than the international sort becouse it supports also Catalan, Euskera and Galego languages)

Note the last character is a point in the middle of the text area, in Catalan it is used sometimes in the middle of a word like Pel·lícula

[EDIT] All of them except the · character and the ç but you will need them for french. Oh, and they are not dialects, they are official standard full languages like English in England and French in France

The ß is pretty much the same as 'ss', and to my knowledge there are no words starting with it -- lowercase only.

Dutch:

Aa-Zz € éëèï

The special characters are Lowercase only, there are no words that start with these characters. In Dutch they are pretty much only used to declare the intonation when you use more than two vowels in a row. They're not that common, and most keyboards don't have special keys dedicated to them.

Finally -- I don't know what you want to use this for, but something to keep in mind: Even though the language itself doesn't use a bunch of the other 'special' characters, you can still come across things like ü or ö inside people's names, especially among people of Turkish descent

Oh, and there are these of course, although some of them are probably no longer relevant:

€ - Euro
¥ - Japanese Yen
£ - British Pound
ƒ - Dutch Guilder (replaced by the Euro)
₧ - Spanish Peseta (replaced by the Euro)

Swedish has åÅ äÄ öÖ after Z in their alphabet.

In Italian we use usually this charset:
AaBbCcDdEeFfGgHhIiLlMmNnOoPpQqRrSsTtUuVvZz


K,J,W and Y are not used, except in 'imported' words from other languages.

I still need to know French special chars and also confirmation on "pure" Spanish extra chars rather that those other dialects Ziggy mentioned.

Right, there are no words beginning with "ß" in the German language, so there is no upper-case version of it.

Swiss-German actually never used "ß" anyway, at least they do not have that letter on their keyboard.

Translating 'ß' to "ss" is only partly correct; when we spell a word with "ß", we usually say "sz", not "ss". But nevertheless in a word like "großartig" (great), we would really replace it with an "ss": "grossartig". On the other hand, and to make things a bit more complicated, I saw Austrians really write 'sz' instead of 'ß'...

I know it from Fußall and Straße, which use "sz" and "ss" sounds respecively, so yeah I'll be adding the ß character to the bitmap font properly.

Yes but I will add those characters too - if you want wrote correctly in italian..:

in Italian we have some words 'accentate' like

why --> perchè
provided, as long as --> Purché
already --> già

Ć,Č,Đ,Š,Ž ---> Croatian/Bosnian

I must advice you in Spanish you will need 2 additional chars to open an exclamation or question: ¡¿.
