One begs to ask why Sony keep picking this type of software for their products.

It was a rootkit like this one, but from their music side.
You bought an album, pop it into your CD/DVD-ROM drive, it auto ran, then it installed a load of shite onto your computer without telling you!
It was pretty ironic that time, because Sony tried to stop anyone messing with the music licenses, but they ran into trouble, because they went against the license for the tech in the rootkit, which was open source if I recall.

What again? You'd have thought the fallout from their last venture into screwing up Windows would've taught them a lesson? What's next? Another 20 million laptop batteries recalled due to them exploding? A PS4 with such alien technology, no person on the earth could possibly program it, costing more than a small car? A Billy Ray Cyrus comeback? I mean come on! Could them mismanage it more if they tried? What are they? The next Amiga Inc.?

Sure. The difference is that, contrary to popular belief, Microsoft don't do it intentionally. Why the hell do you need additional software for a memory stick, post Win98 anyway? :/
Its not as if modern versions of windows, osx or linux need any additional drivers or things. If i bought a memory stick and it had a disk id probably chuck it thinking it was a windows 98 driver or some pdf manual.

You need the software for the thumb print reader. They stupidly try to hide portions of that software so that the "bad guys" can't find it and manipulate it. Unfortunately, they try to do this by running the equivalent of a rootkit on your machine, tricking Windows into not being able to see the directory they put the software in.
What makes this bad is that anyone can use the rootkit to hide directories of their own, including the bad guys. It's really simple to do, too. They even include a handy executable to do it for you.
