Swedish language videos?

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Swedish language videos?

My German is good enough to get by, but I am having a very hard time finding any instructional videos online that teach basic Swedish. Does anyone know where I can find some, especially something geared towards travelers?

Tak!

If its just for visiting I doubt you will need it... at all.

Everyone here speaks very fluent english. They never dub movies and 50% of the TV is in english.
(which is both a blessing and a pain in the arse if you live here and are trying to learn it, as they always reply in english even when you start a conversation in swedish)

Right, because anyone who is over 5' tall and doesn't have three rows of crooked teeth much be involved in pornography.

I know most Swedes speak English, but I think I should make an effort to learn a few basic phrases, since I will be a guest in someone else's country. I can communicate pretty well in German, but I do not know one word of Swedish other than "hej".

here's a cooking vid in Swedish.. *click*

Any phrases in particular? I could probably get a mate to make you some sound bites or something. Although he's from Skåne, so you might get screwed on the accent.

Where in Sweden are you going?

Stockholm area.

Where is the train?
Do you have a room free?
Can you please speak in English?
Where is the bathroom?
How much does that cost?
How do I get to ______?
etc.

I agree, it is courteous to make an effort.

Spelling & grammar probably atrocious but here goes:
Var är tåget (tawget)
Har du ett ledig (leia-dig) rum?
kan du prata engleska?
ursäkta (ur-shek-ta) var är toiletten?
Hur mycket (mu-ket) kosta det?
Hur kan man hitta ________

Other handies:
ursäkta (ur-shek-ta) = excuse me
Hej (hey) / hi / hello = Hello
Hej Då (hay-dooa) = goodbye
Jag Forstår inte (forshtaw) = I don't understand (inte being the implied negative of something)
Tack =thanks
Tack så Mycket (som-mooket)
Ja = Yes
Nej = No
stannar! = stop
Forbjudet = Forbidden
Herre (H) = Mens (toilets)
Damer (D) = Ladies (toilets)
Titt ut! (tit oot :P) = Look out!

I reccommend getting a blitz.. i mean 'berlitz' book for reading on the flight :)

tack = thank you
god dag = good day
bjorn = bear

ok... I think I've hit my limit of useful Swedish phrases.

Stop reading my mind!!!

LOL learning the phrases from those and trying them in a club may just lead to a slap round the chops and a trip to the ER with some very battered looking walnuts :P
(you never know, it may work... :)

Won't you also need to understand their response too, though.?!

Just speak in English, but slowly, and very LOUDLY. :P

The problem is I can't tell what the pronounciation is when I just read text. A lot of it is similar to German, so I think I can pick it up.

What I need is to hear someone speaking it while the text is displayed on the screen.

You better talk American. there ar not so manny british movies around in sweden :)

OK = Gaseline Store in sweden. :) )

Here you go: http://youtube.com/watch?v=p9vujyArcG4 (the English isn't a perfect translation though).

And no. It's nothing like German.

Lol!

I kind of liked that song. :)

Titt ut! (tit oot :P) = Look out!

What's wrong with "Se upp"?
If I was walking down the street and someone yelled "Titt ut!" I would probably think the person had lost his/hers mind.

"Ratten i min Ford, den ë jävligt fin.. men dina rattar ë ta mej fan special!"

and no, I wouldn't recommend trying that one out... ;)

LOL i stand corrected, thanks ;)

Thank you, the download program helped.

When traveling through the country, is it okay to just find a hostel wherever you happen to be? It is very hard to plan an itinerary when I don't really know where anything is.

This is from Hipp Hipp, a Swedish comedy show. It's Swedish for beginners. :)
