Last Gen Consoles == more games

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Last Gen Consoles == more games

Don't get a next gen, pick up a last gen console for 30 or 40 quid, you can buy 12 reasonable/good second hand games for 60 quid or so, gaming has never been so much fun for so little layout.

My vote goes for Gamecube or a PS2, next gen consoles == skint, unless of course you want too get buy with a few games.

I appreciate 'someone' has to buy the next gen consoles, but the last time I bought a 'next gen' console was my N64....

My sons just got Crash Bandicoot, The Wrath of Cortex for the PS2 for a song, and he's mightily impressed.

That would certainly explain you being down on Next-Gen consoles.

I'm guessing most people probably already have a last-gen console if they're in any way interested though. I still have 2 PS2's ( one for US/Jap games and one for Euro ) and a shedload of games I hope to get around to playing one day. You won't get the kind of games I want to play for a song though, as they're rare as hen's teeth on this side of the Atlantic. But sure, if you just want to play European releases, they can be picked up very cheaply. Persona 3 is next on my to-play list, so if you spot that for a song, let me know ;)

Persona 3 look pretty interesting:-

I've been playing ATV Quad Power Racing 2 on my XBox, pciked it up for a fiver at a Game shop, amazed to find it online for 38.99. Its a great game with a lot of depth, for a racer.

If you have a lot of gaming time, that may not be a bad way to go.

But personally, I don't get a lot of gaming time, so Quantity isn't the issue for me. Quality is. Nothing beats Forza Motorsports 2 or Gears of War on my 360 playing on XBox Live at 720p on my projector. Can't do that with a last-gen console.

I'm still impressed by graphics on the original Xbox, I finished playing tomb raider legend the other day and the graphics on that sure don't look like a P3-700 with a geforce 3 card, which technically the xbox is.

graphics improve the eye candy experience, no substitute for good gameplay though. ATV Quad Power Racing 2 has gameplay and graphics, whilst not 'next gen' are still pleasing on the eye.

So is F-Zero GX!

I've been tempted to get a PS2 recently simply because of the amount of games available. But I've resisted so far and am buying a few games for my PSP instead - including some very cheap pre-owned ones from game stores.

Re-making the same games - all-be-it prettier versions is the way the games industry will die. And the new consoles seem to be going the way of the PC - always update the hardware with a new console - or release news of a new console coming in the next 2 years. Rather than getting the most out of a particular platform with original content. I miss the days of the Amiga and ST.

I've got a PS2 and Cube and they are great machines with loads of games, ebay and GameStation (UK) are your friends for "used" games :-)

They are if you're buying, but not if you're selling. :P

Will consider ebay for my next flurry of xbox / gamecube games. Another game thats been getting some mileage on my xbox is rogue trooper, that was another 'steal'. Of now to play James Bond.... then a bit of ATV 2. Just finished some cpp tutorial blah, using tortoise svn for my version control, yip - tortoise svn is almost 'fun' to use.

So i deserve some gaming treat....

Yup. Been that way with all consoles for me. Had 3 games for my PS (Tekken, Fade to Black and some NBA game). 5 games on the N64 (Mario 64, Zelda 64, Goldeneye, Banjo and Kazooie and Conkers Bad Fur Day).

The only exception is really the Wii. When I'm getting an XBox 360 it will also only be for 2 games. Mass Effect and GTA IV.

Yeah, I got Mario 64 for my N64 when I bought it, I went a bit cartridge mad though, reckon I'd 10 to 15 games for it. Lylat Wars was pretty cool, oh the hours I whiled away on that when I broke my back.

Unless you get a PS3, which plays all the old stuff anyway.

They are if you're buying, but not if you're selling. :P
I never sell as I'm a hoarder.

I was highly disappointed with PS1 games on my PS2, they looked crap even with an RGB scart.

I am thinking about getting an original xbox. I am just getting pretty tired of PC games constantly trying to 'push' my hardware for no real reason or benefit to me (doesn't make the experiance any better), in the hopes I will buy a new computer. I think the Timeshift demo proved that.

At least with consoles, you just get the disk/rom , put it in and you can play, and the graphics on xbox1 are still a little better than the wii :)

yeah, me to.

I'd recommend it, you could get a second hand x-box AND game-cube with 4 games for under a hundred quid from a GAME outlet. Theres a deal not to be sniffed at....

Alas, I've just set up my PIC programming suite in my loft, college starts again soon, time for games is on the slide. Have you seen how much Embedded programmers earn..... Might change my philosphy on getting last gen consoles.... NAH! {;-)

Blitzplotter, I don't know if you have seen these, but you might find them fun:

is very interesting, I've currently got a warp13 programmer whose firmware needs updating, managed some successful burns form assembly a few years back but am now more interested in trying C thru (maybe) the CCS C Compiler. Thanks for the info though, xgamestation looks like a very comprehensive package.
