Query Re:TIF Image Format & Poser Export

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Query Re:TIF Image Format & Poser Export

Hello,

perhaps this should be in the content creation forum area but it is more of a programming question than relating specifically to "Poser".

Below are two images:

http://home.people.net.au/~Matthew.Lloyd/lloyd/Stuff/ImageOne.tif

http://home.people.net.au/~Matthew.Lloyd/lloyd/Stuff/ImageTwo.tif

One of them was exported from the poser 'Make Movie' dialog using the 'current render settings option'.

The other was exported from poser using the 'Render' option with the same render settings.

However you will notice that although the tags are supposedly identical when read in a tag viewer the images are very different when read with Windows Fax and Image Viewer.

One image is effectively a mask with non 100% transparent regions shown in white. The other is the image as it should look.

If viewed in Irfanview both images look correct.

What is more strange is that when I convert the images to my own format used by my game engine the color/image problem described above with Windows Fax and Image viewer is reversed - the one which was opaque/transparent appears correct after conversion while the one which appeared correct becomes opaque/transparent.

So obviously the colour information is still there in the transparent/opaque image but it must be stored differently.

(Why couldn't the makers of Poser be consistent with their TIFF image export !!)

Does anyone else know what the difference with these two files are? Both were exported from Poser 4 but from different parts of the application.

Neither of these TIFF images are compressed and supposedly both of them have the RGBA information stored the same way according to the TAG headers.

Thanks for any help you may be able to offer.

TBH these images are too small to see any differences at 1680x1050 (my monitor setting) so I can't really help there.

Try using the .png exporter or another export format instead.

The other thing is that it is easy to be confused by Poser and 'export with current render settings' which I have found (especially in earlier versions of Poser) to be just misleading. You must check these settings again and look at the gui carefully, I am sure that although you think you are exporting them with current render settings in Make Movie - you are not. Seriously look hard and you'll see an option which may make the difference.

I am being deliberatley evasive about the setting as it is years since I used Poser 4 - but it is there and it is very misleading and has caught me out a few times too.

I am using Poser 7 nowadays and the settings are a little clearer to use.

IPete2.

Hi IPete2 - the difference in the two images should be obvious regardless of what resolution you are at - one of them is black and white the other is full color. However it depends on what application you open the images with. As stated, in irfanview they both look identical (both in colour) while in Windows Fax and Image Viewer one is black/white the other is full color.

both are full colour, the difference is that ImageOne has a black silhouette on a white background as the mask and ImageTwo has the inverse.
