Metroid Prime 3 : Corruption

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Metroid Prime 3 : Corruption

I got to play it for a couple hours and I must say that my faith in the Wii has been revewed. Finally theres an original game for the Wii that has great graphics, gameplay, and it actually fun.

I wasn't too big a fan of the previous Metroid Prime games but this one I really like. Graphics are definately some of the better visuals on the Wii...or quite possibly the best so far. I was skeptical at first since the video clips online don't do the game any justice. Corruption definately showcase the Wii graphical capabilities and it almost even looks "next-genish" in terms of what we've seen from the Wii so far, especially in 480p.

The controls I thought worked pretty well and very intuitive. Aiming and shooting is definately easier and there doesn't seem to be any lag that plague games like Reed Steel and doesn't get stuck like in Resident Evil 4. One issue with it though is that it does take a little while to fully turn around, but the game rarely requires you to do so. I wished it had that automatic turn around feature that RE4 had. No big deal though. The new controls makes playing the game much much more easier now.

Gameplay was also a lot better. I did NOT enjoy the previous Metroid Prime games too much but I had a lot of fun with this one. Theres definately much more action and is very cinematic now. The pace doesn't slow down the way it does in the previous Metroid games. There also doesn't seem to be as much backtracking anymore (thank GOD). Levels are also much more interactive. You do however, still do all that scanning thing and some exploration but not as much as before. Which i think is a good thing.

And finnally, I think a first for a Metroid game, is that theres actually appears to be a plot and storyline! The intro of game plays suspicioulsy similar to the intro of Halo. You actually have allie characters that help you out through out the game.

Needless to say, I rarely enjoy any Wii games so far, but I definately reccomend this game to any Wii owners out there.

I just picked this up today after a Monday of fruitless searching. This is the first Wii game I've purchased since Zelda :O

I am really impressed with everything so far, especially the controls and the graphics. The Z targeting mechanic works well along with the free aiming, and grabbing and ripping off enemy shields with the grappling beam/nunchuk feels very natural. This puts Metroid above Call of Duty, then Red Steel for top FPS controls on the Wii.

I prefer using the standard control setting instead of advanced. Standard lets you aim inside the central screen area before the view moves around, whereas advanced will jerk the view with your slightest movement - that gave me a headache after an hour of play.

Even though I wish they had included an online multiplayer mode (simple deathmatch would've sufficed), there are some neat online features using WiiConnect24. I haven't figured out exactly how it works yet, all I know is that Genexi2 sent me a friend voucher and I need to send him one back (I will when I find one!) I think trading the vouchers allows you to unlock the artwork and other extras.

The main extra for me will be the hyper difficulty mode that's unlocked upon completion. Sometimes I think that the Prime series is a bit too easy, so it will be fun to replay it in hard mode for a real challenge.

This game, along with Smash Brothers and Mario Galaxy are the sole reason I purchased a Wii. If those two turn out to be as good as Corruption, I'll have gotten my moneys worth :)

Ah good, so I ain't the only one getting motion-sickness off that.

Not quite sure myself how the heck the whole friend voucher thing works, just seems like somethin you have to rack up some people for and trade points with or something.

Really love the built-in "achievements" system, which you use to unlock extras, wish this was a standard for Wii titles like they are on the 360, as it really does give you additional goals to aim for as you're running along through the game.

Btw Neuro, there is some backtracking involved later on (3rd planet and farther), but the areas are more secluded and sectioned off (need to use your gunship to travel to different locations on the planet), meaning there's less travelling overall if you need to get to a specific area quickly to process with your goal, which is kinda nice.
(I really got tired of running to elevators in Metroid Prime2 just to get to one little spot on my map I didn't fully explore)

Feels more action-orientated than puzzle from my current progress, but I'm loving it regardless, more-so with the narrative, you're actually working alongside others in some spots, rather than being a lone-wolf for the entire game.

Well, because Nintendo still treat Europe as the black sheep of the world, and they hate us. We have to wait another TWO MONTHS for this to come out.
Oh, BTW, we still dont' have paper mario, that comes out in three weeks. Oh, and our VC points cost 50% more than the US and Japan pay.

Anyway, yes, I'll be getting metroid prime 3 when it (eventually) get's released.

I'm looking forward to this. Mind you I don't even have a Wii yet!

Yah I saw the Wiiconnect friend voucher thing, but not sure how it actually works. Plus lots of other little options here. I'm kinda curious to trying out the other control scheme, will have to check it out later on. Doing a little backtracking isn't too bad...i guess its just part of the Metroid genre, but too much of it would begin to suck and give me a headache. But yah, love the action oriented style much more btter. Previous Metroid games always seem to feel like a hassle when playing it. For once I'm actually having fun playing a Metroid games.

I still can't get over just how *fast* the system recognizes gestures, the grapple shot is an absolutely joy to use on enemies.
(you can even control the pulling direction, used in later puzzles)

Well, to pass the time, I got Metroid on the DS, it's good. I've never played through a Metroid game before.

Should I start with DS metroid and work my way backwards, or go with NES metroid (already got this on VC on Wii)

Ahh yes, I may have plans on picking this game up. Seems like according to the reviews, this may be the best FPS game on the Wii by far, am I not correct?

There's not exactly stiff competition, is there? I loved the original Metroid Prime on GameCube...

Well, a lot of the FPS games that were on the Wii, for the exception of Red Steel, which MP3 seems to blow away, from all that I've been hearing, were all third-party FPS games that were multiplatform, like the CoD series, Far Cry Vengeance (which seems like a port of some of the other FC games), and all the like, it seems like Metroid Prime 3 may be the only one that actually feels like a natural FPS on that console.

Heh, not may be. Its the THE best FPS game on the Wii so far....

Keep in mind Metroid Prime3 is an FPA (First-Person Adventurer), so it's not a true FPS in the least, it....just so happens to actually have FPS controls that don't suck on the Wii.
(actually, Call of Duty3 was a pretty damn good near-launch FPS title, albeit it lacked any means of replayability)

How is Metroid Prime not a true FPS? You have big-ass guns you shoot at things with. What else does it require to make it a true FPS?

They choose to call it that because the focus is mainly on collecting items and solving puzzles, then taking your new items to unlock level sections that were previously inaccessible. Kinda like if Castlevania went 3D, calling it a shooter wouldn't exactly fit, either. You're more likely to encounter a room that is filled with things to scan and unlock than enemies to shoot. I don't really buy the re-branding myself, it's still a first person shooter to me.

I would start from the beginning and work my way forward.
1) Metroid (NES)
2) Metroid II: Return of Samus (GB)
3) Super Metroid (SNES)
4) Metroid Fusion (GBA)
5) Metroid Zero Mission (GBA)
6) Metroid Prime (GCN)
7) Metroid Prime: Hunters (DS)

Super Metroid is widely acknowledged as the best game in the series and is not to be missed, it should be available on the VC everywhere by now.

Yeah I didn't feel that Metroid Prime on the Cube was a true FPS either for those very reasons. It was like a 2D adventure platformer made into 3D.

I guess the true definition of FPS is "mindlessly shoot everything that moves, and everything that doesn't move, just to be sure", then. :P

Sure, the puzzle elements of Metroid Prime are what makes the game, but I thought the atmosphere was excellent, too.

That pretty much sums it up, and I love it.

WhenI think of FPS I think of Linear kill everything on level, go to next level, structure - like Doom. Meroid didn't have this. Of course I realise that FPS simply means "First Person Shooter" but people colour that with their own experience I guess.

I know people are still classifying Corruption as an "FPA", even though it still has more of that FPS qualtiy to it. But if thats the case, then what would Bioshock be classified as? Theres a hell lot of searching and backtracking in that game too.
