Sound Design Advice: Space Radio

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to process (non-realtime) audio to sound like it is radio communication between a space craft and ground station? I assume I could us a compressor and add some static and NASA-inspired beeps....

talk thorugh an empty bean can with the microphone on the other side and maybe have a TV on a static channel in the background, you could record your microwave beep noises for the beeps.

That's just my own heath robinson type idea.

Thanks Andy. :) I was thinking more along the lines of what effects to apply in a sound editting program but those are solid ideas (well, expect for the microwave...) I don't want people to think their popcorn is done.

Heath Robinson... ah.. the UK analog of Rube Goldberg...

I found a great page with some sample audio from the Apollo program that I can use as a reference.

Use an EQ to mute the high & low stuff, keep the mid area. Distort it somewhat. If you have anything like bit-reduction, you might use that instead of distortion.. like 4 or 6 bit, that should sound grungy enough. :P
