PIC s chippt things

Alright,

it's a little while since I left high school (errmm 20 years) - I'm interested in peoples views with regards to peripheral interface controllers. There is various avenues to program them, in essence (okay some might see this as going too far) but I see them as potentially as revolutionary as the transistor way back, but are people are being exposed to them only on specialised courses ? Is this a good thing ?

I don't mind admitting I was employed in a electronic background in the first instance.

I think that there may be the capacity to ignite young minds with PIC s after the inital 4 year high school study period, does anybody else think the same ?

Why would I want to program one - what will it do?

I remember that the BBC Microcomputer had something like this built in and had 8? control outputs and 8? sensor inputs, located on the bottom of the machine.
We built a simple bot at school using the BBC to control it.

I personally used 16F84 microcontrollers 5 or 6 years ago due to the 're programmable' (about a thousand times ?) nature of them. Cheap as chips..... Wrote a little code in assembly to produce 1 micorsecond +5V pulses with 10usecond 0V troughs.

I'm sure the 200SX has some micorcontrollers, not sure about the TVR though?
