Am I sad when I sit all day programming ( trying to code :) )with C64 music remixes playing in the background.

There's something about how the SID music sounds that captivates me. Maybe it just brings back the memories of the C64.

Yeah, it's true, the C64 is a legend. Although time goldens memories, I remembered the SID music from "The Hobbit" totally cool, but it's not really as good as I remembered, but still good. Maybe it's also that a PC can not emulate the SID chip in it's original ultra HIFi quality. After all it was a hardware chip on the C64, and a PC can only do it via software.

Not sad, just 'specialised' ;-)

Listening to the samples mp3's on the site, the sid emulation seems and sounds spot on. :)

I quite often code to a chorus of singing sausages. Walls Cumberland ones seem to be especially good singers.

@Amon: Those .mp3 demos have basically nothing to do with the original ultra HiFi quality of the SID chip. They are totally corrupted by some reverb effects and other stuff. It's like the seat in the sphere in First Contact, why do people want to try to improve things when the original is perfect, they will only make it worse. The whole hardware SID feeling is gone from those demos. It's just boring music now. No PC can ever emulate an C64 or Amiga in their original quality, they had so far advanced hardware, that a PC will probabaly never have them.

I found another site. This time the product is not SID emulation but actual Sid Chips for the PC.

60 buck for a sid chip emulator? Insanity! Doesn't fruity loops already do all that kind of stuff, anyway, minus the SID branding? If you have money to waste, get yourself a real 808.

@Amon: Alright, that HW chip for the PC is MUCH better than your previous emulator link, however to be perfect I think the slides are missing the CPU lag from the C64, they are too clean :) In C64 times people programmed the slides, and didn't play on a MIDI keyboard. I'm not crazy, I just bought a new synth, which has also LP scratch noises and loudspeaker membrane overload effects. I think it's crazy, but once you get used to it, you actually like the realism of it.

@LineOf7s: The last link www.sidstation.com has some quite nice material. The SIDSTORY of the SID6581 chip made me feel sentimental. Behind the SIDSOUND link, only the SID ONLY section gives you an impression of the Ultra HiFi sound quality of the 6581 chip, the other examples try to mix SID with reverbs and make it only a background voice, it does not work, SID works only solo with no effects. Too bad the samples are so short. I also noticed some overcuts/distortion, but that's probably because of the .mp3 format or too high recording volume. Professional musicians use .ogg only. Many modern techno songs actually use the voice of the Amiga speech synthesizer too, it's unique, and real Amiga fans will recognize it anytime.

Live in the now, man.

There's more to the SID than that able to be done by composers during the heyday of the C64.

today, whilst coding I initially managed to listen to.... gasp... horror... radio 1, quickly re tuned mid morning when it got a bit bombbastic.

I do the same. Sometimes C64 SIDs, sometimes Euphoric trance, other times classical/blues/rock/metal etc. Retro C64 music is very motivational for me - it just makes me think of making cool games.

I'm surprised anyone can listen to this kind of stuff when doing any programming that requires even moderate concentration. Listen to comedians on YouTube!?!?

For anything but simple coding tasks, I prefer/require total silence. Maybe it's just my age...

I can listen to practically anything except talking.

I can't listen to stuff with lyrics unless they aren't in English. It distracts the coding part of the mind that needs language skills.
