whos useing windows 98

anyone still useing windows 98, 98se or 98 me. just so i know for when i pack my demo. i would like to use molebox but it doesnt work on 98.

if you are useing 98 please could you post you system specs.

I got a dog end test system running 98 with a 32MB Matrox G400 and 128MB RAM on a PII 400Mhz - Molebox works fine on that machine.

Erm, a laptop I bought for £20, Win98... 500mhz pentium three, 32 mb of PC100 RAM... Only used for personal testing, god knows what the GFX card is, but its cack! :)

I'd look but it takes four month to fire up! ;)

oh well thats ok then, i had heard that there was a problem with exe's made with molebox in 98.

what im asking for is im going to post a stress test of my game engine and i wanted everyone to be able to give it a go.

im quite sure that if i use molebox it would put all but the most harded thief off stealing my media. theres a few bits of it im really proud of.

lol, 98? come on its 2007! One should have at least 2000/xp ;)

but i also have a win98 cdrom in my storage. in case you need another tester.. the testing machine will be a 800 mhz via c3 with matrox mystique 8 MB. or geforce 2 gts 32 mb.

You can also do teszting through Win98 in VMWare under XP

98SE, 1Ghz, GF2 GTS 32MB, 256MB RAM.

I've had problems with molebox'd apps before, BTW.

The Security companys usaly use windows 98 sens it let you code directly to harware widout any drivers.

Win98 and WinME have been officially abbandoned by microsoft a year ago.

Therefor security companies, driver writers and all the others dropped support to it as well.

Its up to you to remain on a dead OS, but you will have to face the fact that new software more and more will become imcompatible to it and not run anymore, as it is pointless for the programmers to write 2 different OS handling (win9x kernel and real kernel) if one of them is officially out of order (win9x)

Molebox *does* have problems in windows98. We had several reports of a moleboxed product just failing to run on win98 machines. (big10p was one. :P)

I know win98 is dead but there's no point me upgrading the OS. My whole machine is so old it would make more sense just to get a whole new PC, but I can't afford it. Also, I don't need a more powerful machine, really - I don't play PC games.

cool, thanks for the info. i dont think the people running 98 will have good enough graphics card to run it anyway by the look of it. I going to have options to turn off alot of the eye candy but i dont think it will be enough.

I would imagine there are less 98 users now so it's a small market to target. Ditch 98 and target XP users for a bigger bang for your buck.

I'm on 98 also. I have another machine with XP, but my daily machine runs win98.

Why? Because I can do more (tweak wise) on Win98 than I can do on XP. 98 doesnt hide everything from the user (so it's more unstable if you don't know what you're doing) as XP does. But if you stay away from Windows/Internet Explorer, 98 can be *very* stable.

...and I feel more confortable on 98 than on XP. So why should I change, if my old computer does absolutly everything I need it to do?

Also, the above poll doesnt represent the things here in Brazil (and probably on a lot of 3rd world countries) where A LOT of people have old computers, and just cant afford to run 2000/XP on their machines.

I usually never look back at a developer site (game/program/whatever) if the program doesnt support win98 just because they think no-one else uses it.

Unless the program actually uses and needs something only XP or Vista has to function, I think it's dumb to exclude a part of the market (as small as it may be) "just because".

And btw: molebox works fine here :)

personally i dont care about 98. its just too old. too buggy.

im using molebox if it works great but if it doesnt dont blame me, i will make this clear on my site when i release the demo.

i very much doubt that anyone useing 98 would have a good enough system to push around the average 10 - 20 animated charactors i have on screen anyway.
