Test of Engine v1.14 renderer

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Test of Engine v1.14 renderer

Please give this a try. It is the renderer I wrote in the last few days, using old-style lighting with bumpmaps and specular, plus some other new features. I'm pretty sure it will all work fine, but I wanted to put a test out there to make sure.

This also shows how the materials options work. Specular channel is stored in the bumpmap alpha channel, while texture alpha is stored in the basetexture alpha channel. Different blend modes can be used.

It looks fabulous. I'll give it a go as soon as I get home. I have an ATI X800 Pro, should I even bother downloading this later?

It will probably work on SM2 cards. It worked on my X1550.

Works perfect on my system, the whole bit, at 60fps, sometimes it bumps at 61fps, but it's rock solid.

Hardware: Opteron 165 @ 2.8ghz, ATI X800GTO2 unlocked R480 core to X850XT @ 500mhz with 256MB GDDR3 @ 1240mhz, 2 gigs of DDR434.

Good!

I get between 450 and 560 FPS When I press the V Key and 85 when normal. I guess its syncing to my monitor refresh rate.

All in all it looks good and runs smoothly. I don't get any very slight jittering like I did with the other renderer.

If I press the V key, I get anywhere between 70 fps and 160 fps depending on where I'm looking. So it's not earth shattering performance. But it could be my AA settings too, since I always set those high.

EDIT: I changed my AA settings in Catalyst, but it didn't change anything in the performance of the application. Correct me if I'm wrong, but there are no shadowing performed here, just a lightmap?

Yeah. The bumpmapping can be a little slow on old cards. You can keep this in mind when designing your scene. If you are designing it for low-end machines, don't use a lot of bumpmapped materials.

No problems here except alt-tabbing to different app does not release the mouse. Otherwise everything was silky smooth.

Leadwerks, are you supporting DXT texture compression also? Or is there something in the likes in OpenGL?

Yes, it loads compressed dds, DXTC1, 3 or 5. That is the best format to use, but I was doing a lot of editing.

syncs to my monitor refresh (60) then averages around 350 without vsync on

I'm running 4200+ dual core AMD
7600gt agp gfx

60-61 and 770-1000 fps, no visible problems
Intel Core2duo, 8800GTS OC 320mb

85/150 here, all looks fine.

I get the "processing lights" progress bar complete and then the program simply exits.

In the log file that was created it says:

OpenGL Version: 1.5.4647 WinXP Release
GLSL Version: 1.00

Compiling vertex shader object "shaders\post.vert"...

My laptop is an ASUS A4K, 3400+ AMD, 512MB Ram, ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 with 64MB VRAM (SM 2.0) running WinXP PRO.

Should it have run on this?

Works perfectly.

Matty, if you run this utility I bet it will say your max texture size is 1024:
http://komku.blogspot.com/2007/02/gpucapsviewer-graphics-card-information.html

I can add a check to resize the lightmap is that is to big.

Hi Leadwerks - it says my max texture size is 2048x2048.

i bet they use a texture bank with 2049x2048 or 2049x2049 and uses only 2048x2048 :)

When was the last time you updated your drivers? You are running GLSL 1.00 and OpenGL 1.5.

I double click on the exe and um... nothing happens... nothing at all. geforce fx5900xt, win xp home, athlon xp2600

Hi Leadwerks - I've never updated my drivers - mainly out of fear that something will go wrong if I do (as it used to happen on my old Win98/95 boxes when I did so). I've never had any problems running other OpenGL applications though. What should GLSL x.xx and OpenGL x.x be at in order to run your program?

When I double-click Engine.exe, two errors pop up sequentially:
wglChoosePixelFormatARB() function not found!

and
wglChoosePixelFormatARB() failed.

Then no window pops up.
ATI X1950 Pro 256-bit, AMD Athlon 4200+ Dual Core, 3GB DDR400 RAM, Windows XP Home SP2.

I also tried your other more demanding test, both Engine.exe and Engine_low.exe produced an empty window for half a second before exiting.

RadeonX800 P3 3Ghz 768 ram Vista Always 60 FPS

Cool

Works fine (and looks great) here. A solid 60 FPS.

It does crash when I exit the app though:

Matty... You're not working on 98/95 anymore. Comparing driver stability on XP to that is like comparing apples to oranges.

And it makes a difference. My card didn't render the tire texture or anything, until I updated my driver (it also improved my frame-rate). What it comes down to is, you don't get the benefit of newer versions of graphics APIs such as OpenGL or DirectX if you don't keep them up to date.

I get anywhere between 40-100 fps depending upon how many objects are in the view port and if I'm standing stationary or not. Pressing the V key doesn't really have any impact on the frame-rate.

App is stable too. No crashes or anything on exit.

The machine config:

Unless you have an 8000 series card thats true.
But on those I've to say that the drivers get worse and worse, no idea how this crap passes WHQL over and over again ... how can a driver that drops performance even be published ...

RocketGnome, is your screen refreshing at 100 hz? If it is, then that is why it tops to 100 fps. If you press V, it is possible it will reach more than 100 fps as you let the refresh of the engine go as far as it can.
