GE Force 8800 noise

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/GE Force 8800 noise

I swapped out my GE Force 8800 PNY with an ATI test card, then when I switched them back the 8800 makes a very loud high-pitched squealing noise. It only happens when the card is plugged into the mboard. If just the power is connected, it does not make noise. I took it out and the ATI card still works fine.

Mmm. Not sure.

Did you properly uninstall and reinstall drivers when switching cards?

It could be the fan - make sure nothing has got in there.

Could be that not enough power is getting to the card - my GTX uses two PCI cables - are you using 2 and, if not, are you meant to?

I only had one plugged in, and it made a buzzer go off.

The only conclusion I see is something happened to the board when you took it out.

It's sorted now - it needed the second PCI cable.

Yeah that happened to me when I got mine. Didn't realise it needed a second connection and was quite alarmed at the scream it made.

Haha, I did this too, was with an earlier card though!

Yeah, I had just built a new PC, and that noise sounded really... expensive.
