I-S Talent Competition 07

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/I-S Talent Competition 07

Hello community!

The show must go on. It's the 1st August 2007 here in Germany and with this date the 2nd Ironstorm-Studios talent competition begins.
This contest is something totally special and new. Contrary to the last one, which was very successful, this one's international and is held in the french, english and german community, of course everyone can participate.
The aim for me personally is to find the best from all parts of the world and to finally find out who owns us all Smile

The competition starts now and ends on 12th September 2007. The submissions are to be done via eMail until 11.59 pm (MET). The clock can be found at the contest website.

The task for this competition is: Program a complete game or a finished tool.

The rules, the task and the prizes are all described on the website, check it out for further information.

Who wins the competition will be decided one day later, 13th September 2007, through a vote on the website. Everyone (not only who participated in the

contest) will be able to elect their favorites. The vote will end on 20th September 2007.
The winners will be announced one day later and will receive an eMail from me. The prizes will be given away by the winners' choice. Out of all prizes (as shown on the website) the 1st-placed can choose his prize first, then the 2nd and so on.

Since I neither have the language skills nor the time to answer all questions concerning the contest, there will be one person to contact in each forum. For the english community Justus and me (Ironstorm) for the german community.

The official contest website is www.contest.ironstorm-studios.de .

Finally I want to thank Justus Blümer for the translations on the website as well as these posts and all sponsors. I hope that most of the questions are already answered and pass power to the particular contact persons. When you have a question please post it here or just write a e-mail to question@....

I wish you all happy coding and hope for a high participation.

Best regards,
Ironstorm

Somehow (that logo, the prizes) it looks like a compo for 3d games or tools, what chance does a 2d game make? And I don't mean puzzlegames (like match3) here, as their concept is rarely depending on 2d or 3d, but I mean retro'ish games such as classic platformers 'n such.

Also:
- If you implement particle or sprite effects in your application you have to submit the code, but you may decide wheather it should be published or not.

oO And what if I include green smurfs who're humming the Requiem of Faure? :) Seriously tho, what's the intention of *this* specific rule?

- You are not allowed to submit projects you have already published. You have to have started the project after the beginning of the contest.

Is it possible to use an already started project and deviate it's usefulness towards a project that is for this contest? I've got plenty of useful code I already written...

I'm laying claim to this (before anyone else does):
http://www.blitzbasic.com/codearcs/codearcs.php?code=1552

See you all in the winner's enclosure.

heh,

"If you implement particle or sprite effects in your application you have to submit the code, but you may decide wheather it should be published or not.
"
er..why?
not that it really matters - jst seems a little odd.

- and i would enter - but i never finish anything ;)

Hey, nice! I've been waiting for another compo since RetroRemakes shut its doors.
Hopefully, i can think of something to enter.

You have to have started the project after the beginning of the contest.

No one can check that. One might use a large library of ready-made types/functions -made in the past few years- so that creating a game is almost like RAD. Just take Grey Alien's game framework kit, that's been a lot of work, what if someone makes a game with it these next 6 weeks? So, the definition of 'the project' is vague. Is it *all* the code there is in the project (inclding libs), or is it only the RAD code, or perhaps the scripts?
It's all a bit in contradiction with this rule:
- It is allowed to use libraries, DLLs and codes which are not your own.
Those libs/dll's were no doubt started/finished before this compo started.

Btw, it nowhere states one has to submit the source/media -except that odd sprite/particle rule-, is it possible to cheat by *not* using a Blitz version to make the product?

Yeah, the rules aren't laid out very nicely.

Maybe some clarification is needed?

Hello,

I am to represent Ironstorm in the englishspeaking community (as written in his post).

Although the logo might imply that 3D games are more likely to be more successful in contest, I have to say that threedimensionality does not say anything about a game's quality. Think of yourself, I am sure you would rather vote for a good 2d game than for a bad 3d game. So would the rest of the community.

You are absolutely right. This was our fault and this rule is just a leftover of last year's contest and was included just "copy&paste" like. And since it doesn't make any sense to keep it, it will be removed from the website by today evening (which means in a few hours).

Furthermore you do not have to enclose your code to your submission, only if there is reasonable doubt from our side whether your game or application was made with Blitz we will ask you to send it to us, but actually a look into the .exe file is enough to find out.

The rule that the project has to be started after the beginning of the competition simply exists to avoid anyone's advantage because he/she has a lot more time. Of course we have no proof for that unless someone has made publications about his game before the contest began. And I don't think that you can produce a good game only equipped with a few libraries, you would not be very successful without any programming skills at all.

What do you want to cheat with? C++? I couldn't think of a programming language which is easier to use than Blitz (and one will probably recognize a game made with one of those odd game making programs).

If you have any further questions, feel free to ask. If you don't want to do that here, write me an eMail to question@...

Justus

Ok, that helps.
What version of 3d World Studio is the 2nd prize?

I haven't worked on anything in a couple of months, and rarely check this board anymore, but glad I did today! Will be starting a project I've had in mind for awhile today.

*starts programming away*

What? No Blitz3D? Or was that just a type? I'm holding my breath.

Edit: Looking at the German version, it seems that I can use Blitz3D. Someone should change that on the English website. I almost soiled myself. Twice.

I've began work on it, and visited the site again and noticed there's no forum or anything.. Where can we show off what we've done so far to all the other contestants?

Ironstorm : Did you receive my translation ? :) I
translate all the web site, check your anti spam filter !

Hello,

I hate being the one to bring the bad news, but I have don't have a choice:
Ironstorm, initiator of the whole contest thing, suddenly and apparently unexpectedly became a father and declared in the german forums that he has decided not to have anything to do with programming or the Internet at all for a (probably rather long) while.

Since the only last wish he left behind was for the administration to take care of the competition, the contest is hereby cancelled. Neither does anyone have contact to the sponsors nor can we access the website so the situation looks kind of desperate.

We are all very sorry for this sudden end that noone expected.

With best regards,
Justus
