Number of abandoned projects?

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Number of abandoned projects?

Mine must be about 10 or something. I abandoned counting them too.

[Edit]

13 completed (93%)
1 abandoned (7%)

Think we had this thread (or something like it) before. I don't mean the recent abandoned projects listing, but a count. Anyway...

What's more interesting is the ratio of abandoned vs total. I know GfK will beat me on ratio, but here goes anyway. (Note this list is BLITZ only. If I included all my past C++, assembly and AMiga/C64/Spectrum/BBC etc projects I'd be here a long time.)

Total: 11
Abandoned: 1.5 (0.5 because Jewel of Orion was never a serious project, but Iron Fist was)
Completed: 9.5 (inc. framework, old skool demo and C64 game collector)
RATIO = 13.6% of total abandoned. Not bad ;-)

Updated my post with this 'ratio' thing.

Same. I never took on any serious projects prior to Amiga, but if I were to count my Amiga projects it'd run into literally hundreds. Only abandoned two Amiga projects, and that was because Commodore went belly-up.

I can happily live with just three ditched projects in nearly 20 years. :)

Blitz only...

Yep, I've finished everything I've started ... just take my time getting there sometimes!

Do have 2 currently in progress though. One nearing completion and the other on hold (not abandoned ;o) ). Plus a list of stuff I've pencilled in for the future.

ive abandoned my rtype style shoot em up to work on my Syndicate style game and ive put transformers on hold. The game im working on is playable now so im very sure i will complete it. so if its the only one of the 3 to get completed that gives me a 66.6% abandon ratio which is quite poor really.

How do you define abandoned? I've started lots of projects that I haven't finished, but I don't consider them abandoned because I only got far enough to judge the viability, playability, test concepts, or whatever. Others I've done designs for, and never even started for one reason or another, but again they're not abandoned, I just chose not to make them because they were tehnically limited, not fun, or whatever. Once I've got past that point, I've not given one up yet.

So that gives me..

10 Completed (100%)
0 Abandoned (0%)

Abandoned = started but isn't and never will be completed. imho.

Abandoned = started but isn't and never will be completed. imho.

Ok, then how do you define started? If started includes making any notes, coding up a demo, putting together some tests, or anything like that then you can probably rewrite my stats to

10 Completed(10%)
90 Abandoned(90%)

GfK. You missunderstood my Amiga + earlier days, very rarely was ANYTHING finished. Proving that it is possible to change ;-)

Gabriel: Yeah good point. I guess if you know you are writing a prototype to assess viability it's different from going "YEAH I'M GONNA MAKE THIS GAME!" and then petering out for whatever reason. So your stats now look bad yet it's good business practice which is different from the "I'll start for fun, oh dear I gave up" approach.

***Bit tricky to define abandoned then. Perhaps it should be games that were started and got quite far (beyond prototype stage) with the intention to finish, but then never got finished.***

**Also, perhaps abandoned should include on hold for >1 year?***

I would say that started would be starting to enter code that would eventually become part of the final product. Therefore plans, scribbles, sketches, concepts or test programs do not count as a started project. These are all part of the concept or feasibility stage, which are used to determine whether to start the project proper.

Prototype! that's the word my underpowered brain was trying to come up with!

I'm an eyes-bigger-than-my-belly coder. Too many ideas, too little time. So I usually end up writing ten prototypes and eventually I find one I like enough to go ahead and make.
