Improving upload speed of broadband connection

Is there anyway to improve my upload speed of my broadband connection or is it limited by my ISP? I`m getting a average of around 250 kbps which seems very slow. Maybe this is a normal upload speed?

Just thought I`d ask to make sure that there is nothing that I could be doing to improve it.

250kbps upload is good.

256Kbps is fairly typical.

Before my ISP switched me to 3Mbit download, 384 Kbit upload, I had 1.5Mbit download 256 Upload.

Upload speeds tend to be much lower than download speeds for 'normal' residential DSL, cable or wireless broadband connections. The 'A' in ADSL stands for 'a-symetric'. The idea behind it being that the vast majority of home users don't need more than that anyway, plus higher speeds can be sold for a huge premiuim to business users that *do* need the speed and can afford to pay for it.

If you need high upload speeds then you either have SDSL (symetric, where upload and download speeds are the same) or dedicated circuits like T1's and the like... but expect to pay 10+ times as much for that tier of connection as you do for 'normal' ADSL/cable.

Yeah I hate crappy upload speeds.

Quick: Improving upload speed can only be done one of two ways:

1) Stay on ADSL and pay for 'office' class broadband which gives 8192/832. This is expensive though.

2) Get your broadband from Be or Virgin (ADSL2+ and cable, respectively).

**EDIT** Oops, maybe I should read more carefully. 8Mb ADSL as standard provides 448Kb upload speed. If you're still on 2Mb or slower download, this is why your upload sucks.

I'm with Virgin Media on the 20mbit connection. They give me 90 Kilobytes upload and I use every byte if it.

I can understand why ADSL has a low upload rate because to get a fast upload ( to the maximum of 2.5mb ) you need to be on fastpath technology which uses a higher frequency ( same as download) to transmit the data. But it comes at a cost in that you will lose 2-3 megabits of your download.

Cable on the other hand with DOCSIS 3.0 can have a very high upload to the point where it's as fast as the download. People in Japan and some EU countries have 100mbit upload/download.

The reason why Cable companies like VM are limiting your upload capacity is because (I was told by VM Tech) Traffic Shaping and they don't want people running servers congesting the network.

BE Broadband are the only provider I know of that can provide you with an upload of over 2mbit.

Yes, that plus there isn't a great deal of ( legitimate ) demand for a fast upload. The average user won't be uploading to any great degree, so they concentrate their bandwidth so that they can advertise a high download speed, which is what most people want anyway.
