WebHosting ... questions

Hi guys, ...long time without posting for me

I would like to tell you that I'm basically done with my game.
For the ones who knew/remember about TECNO, you may have thought
I abandoned the project but I did not :)
Still have the dummy site, if you want to watch something I uploaded two short
YouTube videos lately: visit here

Anyway,
First, I'm in the tedious process of finding a publisher so any
advice or contacts are welcome at this moment ...

Second, I'm also looking for web-hosting to upload a decent/official site for the game,
think I will go with GoDaddy.com

and I have a question

in webhosting, the data about disc-space and bandwidth, are in GigaBITS, correct?
and I have to divide by 8 to know in GigaBYTES,

so 500Gb bandwidth per month = ~60 gigas of files transfer (?)

I'm planning having some videos in the website and the demo download is around 50mb,
How much bandwidth do you think is ok? 500Gb ?

Usually with web hosts the webspace/bandwidth amount is in megabytes/gigabytes not megabits/gigabits. I'd go so much to say if a web host turned out to be advertising in "bits" I'd claim false advertising as the norm is definitely "bytes".

GB = GigaBytes
Gb = GigaBits

If they're advertising Gb, you're getting GigaBits, but Qube is correct that most advertise in GB in which case you'd be getting GigaBytes.

GoDaddy are a good domain host, but I wouldn't really rate them for webhosting. I'd look at DreamHost or PowWeb for good shared hosting. I haven't ( yet ) required dedicated hosting, so i can't comment on that. From the sound of it, you were thinking of shared hosting.

BTW, I can remember when Tecno was one of the best looking 3DRad games I'd seen. Now it's one of the best looking B3D games, and one I'm looking forward to trying.

Go for DreamHost, use the promocode BLITZ3D and get a $97 discount on subscription... it gets so cheap it doesnt hurt to try :)

Also I just renewed with them, and I have no complains. Any time a problem appeared they help me out to solve it pretty quick.

And I just saw the videos... pretty cool!

Depends -- if it's just your grandma downloading the game then having 51MB will do.

If you spark the next internet graze, then a terrabyte won't be enough. ;-)

It's nearly impossible to give any realistic answer here without knowing a whole lot more about the project in question, knowing how the 'market' will respond to is, and and what's going to be done to promote it.

bandwidth requirements range from zero to near infinity, and at this point I doubt many people can give you a definite answer here.

I'm pretty much satisfied with the graphics, but the graphic's lack is the dynamic-lighting as
you may guess, ... anyway think I can live with that ...

Wow, I'm still constantly impressed with what some people are able to achieve with blitz. Anyway, I'll stop talking off topic, now... :P

As Qube said, bandwidth, etc. is supposed to be measured in Gigabytes. And as Gabriel says, Gb is Gigabits so if a host says "Bandwidth = 500 Gb", and not GB you should contact them to make sure it's Gigabytes.

As a general guide, I got this from Netfirms Plus, Advantage and Business hosting plans.

- 500 GB data transfer for light to moderate visitor traffic.
- 2,000 GB data transfer for a busy website.
- 3,000 GB data transfer for busy websites with multimedia.

So 500 GB should be ok, but in case you do exceed that you should go with a host that lets you upgrade to a better bandwidth.

OT: I thought you'd given up with Tecno. Really great job on finishing it!
