Over the last couple of days, my macbook pro has stopped giving the apple chime when it starts up. I remember someone telling me this is a diagnostic thing. Is there something wrong with my laptop?

1) if you have the sound disabled (in the OS) it won't chime.
2) Resetting the PRAM might sort it otherwise. (don't know the vulcan death-grip for that one off hand - ask google ;-)

This may sound obvious, but you haven't accidentally muted or turned down the sound? Can be quite easy to do on those function keys.
No, definitely not anything to do with the volume...
Do you have any external speakers attached ?
Could always run 'Psst' to see if that solves it.
