at a huge limitless funded game company, what kind of game would you make?
If you were a Game Designer...

westworld !!!!
match three
The "Make a sandwich" game. You get to pick what layers of meat to put in and for a bonus round you get to pick the sauce.
Cool EH!!
I think so.
I could add a time attack mode where you have to remove the pickle as fast as you can.

Yeah. You could make a McDonald's game. You play the part of the customer, and get handed a bunch of ingredients in a bag. You have to arrange them yourself into something that looks vaguely edible. Cool EH!!
the next...uh wait...the FIRST WoW killer!
Hello.
Larn.
Goodbye.
Larn.
Goodbye.
My dream project would be a real-physics sandbox game, like a super-duper Erector Set. The game would allow the player to build bridges, skyscrapers, roller coasters, pretty much anything, and stress test the creations with wind tunnels, weight loads, water and ice action, etc. You would be able to run cars on the roller coasters, fill your skyscrapers with people, all that good stuff. Since I have limitless funding and, I imagine, limitless time, the game would also include gears, pulleys, engines and so on, so the player could design moving machinery, cars, earth moving equipment, whatever.
I'm thinking CAD-Meets-Roller-Coaster-Tycoon with a dash of Sim City thrown in.

I'd be making the game I'm making now.
Hentai games! Hmmm, no scratch that... where that came from?! O_o
I'll do it like 3D realms and take a reaaaaaaally long time to make a Duke Nukem Forever ;)
Seriously now, I really doubt someone would just spill their "dream project" here :P

The dream project is something you'll never get to make. That's the whole point. What would you make if you had no restrictions whatsoever.
I'd probably make a fantasy MMO. But with about 20 races and 16 classes or so. And have it where each race can be any class.

No it isn't. I'm making it. If I'm making mine now, why shouldn't others make theirs at some stage? I'm not special ( although they did let me ride the special bus to school. )
Exactly. I'll make my dream project sooner or later - I just need the resources (money + team) to do it - and believe me, if I could make a game with no resources at all, I can get to the point where I will make my dream project :)
I just hope I'm not too old when that time comes heh

I'd remake Oblivion.
I think that's enough for now.

Fractally generated Elite.
So... The Galaxy is created from a seed, each star is a seed for a solar system, each solar system has x planets of which all have physical properties that makes them habitable or inhabitable based on temperature, what's on the surface etc etc.
From there the actual terrain is fractally generated and the inhabitants (if any) are generated based on gravity, temperature how long it's been alive etc etc etc.
All in all, a game that is vast and very few programmed elements. This way you could go to a planet that at a particular grid ref on that planet there's a really nice waterfall and lake (or something) and it's never been programmed or even conceived by the programmer.
All vegetation, beings, would be based on the properties of the planet and the way everything works would be based on physics.
OK... You'd need a lot of processing power to pull this off... But I think it would be cool!
Anyway... That's what I'd like to see!

Rob understands!
sounds a like a mixture of master of orion and spore, rob. interesting.
ok, seriously:
i would make a game, where developers provide only the basic shape of the world; just like earth before man appeared on it. in that world every object can be used, transformed and combined to form other objects. everything dynamic and user generated.
to get a start of some kind of gameplay, there should be two parties competing each other. the goal is to erase the other specimen completely. for that goal players could build forts, weaponry, vehicles etc. players would create clans/teams by themselfs and organize raids on cities of the other party and the likes...
if one party would be eliminated finally, everything would start from the beginning, just like in matrix for example.
i have absolutely no idea if that would work out as a game, but thats what i keep in the back of my mind for quiet some time now...

I'd be developing the platformer I've had dwindling around in my head that I was otherwise saving for after I graduate college when I'd have some decent animation skills.

I'd be using John Carmack's new Tech5 engine.

Everyone has limitless funding, you just have to find the path to it.
Jeremy is right.
Perhaps, but not limitless time. Hence, the question posed is if you had limitless funding right now, what kind of game would you make.
Re: the original question... You'd make the game they told you to. Most big game companies develop product based on SKU plans, not what designers want. And even at the companies which do let designers develop new concepts, there are few designers with that power. Odds are you wouldn't be one of them, regardless of talent. :)
hmm limitless funds eh? ok let's spend some cash...
I would grab a copy of red alert 2, specifically the unit models. Then I would take those models to lockheed and martin and say I want one lifesize copy built of each unit from each side GDI and NOD. All of the models must be to exact size specification and must be built as full working simulators. each unit would be fitted with a camera and headset comms.
I would then program in the red alert 2 code to function as an interactive landscape which is seen through your vehicles windscreen/viewport. Then I would get the Red Alert code to interface all the vehicles together. Orders would come in to your HUD from one person who would play commander at a huge console, or you could do free for all campaigns as well. When you die, you have to wait for another unit of your type to be built to go off again. It would play just like the PC version just using real life size simulators. I would need then to buy a few hundred acres of land and put two huge sheds on it. one called GDI and the other NOD. I would call this place HEADRUSH, and charge everyone $50 a game to play a mission. Are we broke yet? :)

..i'll bring and pay best 3D games artists ever, what money can buy and force them to use B3D to make kicking ass game :)
Atually I think I would spend the money on multiple mansions (sorry "offices") around the world to develop the game in and then make a platoform game.
I'd make a sub sim where not only is every knob and dial correctly modeled, but the personalities of the men on-board count for something.
(This is a pet peeve of mine about sub-sims - all this time and effort is taken over modelling physics, shipping of the day, water fx etc.. - yet the human element of people coopped up in a metal tube and under extreme stress hardly gets a look-in).

Hmm... Lemme think. Maybe a nice shooting gallery game for the Wii, something similar to Duck Hunt from the original NES days. I'd like to think that would be very easy, challenging, because you need to use the crosshair as you target the moving animal across the screen, and you have to move the Wiimote over the target in time. The Wiimote can have about the same challenge as the NES Zapper did.
