Excitment level high - Google Earth/Maps stuff

I was messing about on Google Earth last night when I spotted something odd.

In either Google Earth or use http://maps.google.co.uk/maps (and switch the view to 'Satellite') - search for St Mawgan - it will find a few options - you want the 'International Airport' one.

When you get there - scroll out a bit - you will see another airfield a few miles directly above the first one.

You'll see straight away that some odd is going on there.

This thing is full of those huge round fields that cover the landscape of the US. The US ones are supposed to be crop fields.

Okay then - if the UK ones are crops too - how come one of them is across an old runway?

Who'd grow crops in a field when 25/30% of it is over concrete and when they could easily put the field elsewhere where there is room?

I think it is alien stuff - this is all within an airfield.

Who the hell would create a field of crops shaped like that - with part of it over concrete?

This is Alpha class stuff - we are not supposed to be seeing this.

The following information is highly classified, and therefore, if I tell you I'll have to have someone come round to your house later and take that shiny new PC off your hands...

The airfield in question was shutdown in the early fifties and converted, at some point, into a radio antenna array.
The circles (and squares) are closed off areas, the center of which reside rather high radio antennas, the purpose of which I am afraid you do not have clearance to concern yourself with.

The reason they appear to cross the cement-laid runway feature, is mainly due to the fact that since they've been unused for so long, they have a tendency for grass to grow on them.

The enclosed areas are mown regularly.

I repeat, do not concern yourself Puki... it could be the last thing you do...

A road - a big circle thing - a car - a field of 'GREYS'. Clearly, they wait for a passing car to get to the trap (the circle over the road) and then the 'Greys' rush in from the south field.

I clearly see an army of 'Greys' in the field to the south of the circle that is over the road.

That used to be/still is part of RAF st mawgan.
The old runways you can see might be the original ones closed down sometime after ww2. The circles are probably radio/beacon towers or something with their radiation safe 'no-go zones'.

The newer airfield to the south (east of watergate bay) were still in use later at least in the 60's. I know someone who was stationed there (they nust still be in use for something as there are 2 hercules sitting next to the runway).

There is a 3rd airfield further north. I dunno what this is but its no doubt part of the same thing.

When I take the family camping we usually stay at the site right next to St Mawgan air field... it aint the same since it ceased to be a shared US airbase runway last year... no free airshows :(

I didnt see MANY `greys` there last time either?... maybe they've packed up & left together with the USAF lol

That hacksaw shaped bunker, note the 'extra secure' perimeter and sand trap for footprint preservation (possibly even mines) is where the RAF & USAF kept nukes that could be fitted to the Nimrod long range reconissance/bomber planes. It was all 'TS' during the cold war. There seems to be little sensitivity anymore, you can even see area 51 on google earth, plain as day with planes sitting on the runway. I guess they think any enemy worth worrying about already has detailed sat-images anyway so theres no point in hiding it from joe public.

I've been up there loads of times, it's the surf capital of Scotland you know and a great place for a beach party! Apparently US Stealth Bombers were tested there.

I remember there being a similar airbase down in Newquay - it seems that the surfing is always best when there's a secret airbase nearby ;)
