Tomb Raider Anniversary

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Tomb Raider Anniversary

Downloaded the demo earlier, played it through, loved it... Ordered it... And the Tomb Raider Movie was just on tele too!

Clearly it's been a Tomb Raider day!

I'm keen on this too. Will get for PS2 after I finish Legends!

Got it, loved it, bought a new joypad for it! :D

its cool, and like many games now work with the 360 gamepad and 360 mappings out of the box. Feels just like a console game.

Brought back a lot of memories of the old game, still has some of the same feel despite being brought up to date with reasonable graphics by modern standards. The camera isn't too bad compared to other recent tombraider games, still gets troublesome in some areas though.

My biggest problem with it, like Legends is that if you press left Lara moves left on the screen rather than moves to her left.

I preferred the old control where you hit backwards and she hopped back rather than turning around and running towards the camera. Makes the shooting bits a bit annoying...

Apart from that though it's all good running, jumping, swimming fun!

Hmmm i've watched someone playing Tomb Raider and took over at some point... :O), played Tomb Raider2 too which was great but then i only did quick tests in the others and i lost interest. Personally i don't have seen anything which makes it worth for me playing it again, no matter if the puzzles are slightly different, if there are some new moves or the graphics are prettier. I would have prefered if they would have worked out a new not Tomb Raider like game instead.

Tomb Raider is one of the games were the sequels are polished to a direction that they are boring. No interesting edges or ideas.

I think everyone has that problem with the series nowadays.

It seems Crystal Dynamics and Buzz Monkey Software spent most of the dev time trying to get the physics right on Lara's boobs.

I love the rehashed version, but I can honestly say I love the original more. Even 10 years on!

Personally I think TR1 was great
TR2 wasn't great
TR3 was superb...
TR4 was very poor.

5 and 6 I never played

TR7 (Legends) That was good fun, but too much person killing for my liking

And Finally, TR8 where they've got back to the heart of TR1 but with (better than) TR7 graphics and physics puzzles.

Why play it? Well it's probably one of the best jump around on platforms, flicking switches, solving puzzles and interact with the scenery 3rd person games out there (if there is such a genre) !!

[edit] OK... Looks like this Tomb Raider isn't TR8... There's a TR8 in development, so this is TR7.5 I guess!

I played TR1 on PS1, then 2 and 3 on PC, skipped 4/5/6 as heard not so good, Legends nice (nearly finished), looking forward to this one.

Yay! Just had an email from Play...

PC... Don't own any games consoles!

Actually, Tomb Raider Legend has a Next Gen graphics mode that is not included in Tomb Raider Anniversary, so the graphics have actually taken a step backwards!

Having said that, the graphics are still very good and I can run everything maxed out at 1600x1200 on my set-up, whereas the Next Gen mode of Legend looked gorgeous, but just ran at a playable speed at 1024x768 with some filtering turned down.

Depends on how you cut it Jazzie, my gfx card hasn't got nextgen features so I couldn't run Legends in NextGen and the effects weren't as good as in Anniversary.

I think they maybe relyed heavily on NextGen fx for the prettiness. This time round all the fx are not NextGen and look better than Legends (with NextGen switched off).

The water fx are the big one, they looked nice in Legends with NextGen off, the screenshots I saw with NextGen on looked gorgeous. However, in Anniversary the water looks gorgeous without NextGen.

Also the surroundings are much bigger in this one.

Maybe it is a step backwards because it's not using NextGen, however, for us non NextGen people it looks better, and arguably as good as Legends with NextGen switched on.

I'm only saying it's a bit of a step backwards because of there not being a NextGen graphics mode. I'm sure NextGen aside, there has been a big improvement over the quality of graphics ... I just don't see it as clearly as I've only briefly played Legend in non-NextGen mode. Anniversary does look really good, so I guess I'm just a tad spoilt after the NextGen content in Legend.

Graphics aside, it's a great game and returns to what a Tomb Raider game should be all about.

TR1 is about to start on BBC3 now.
