Materials - Surfaces?

I'm building a mesh in Milkshape. In order to apply different material properties to different polys, do they need to be seperate surfaces?

Is a group the same as a surface in Milkshape or Ultimate Unwrap?

I can inform you that the index number fom milkshapes blitz3d always changes values. this makes it fun to code for example walkable surface to slippery one.
