I'm currently running windows XP 64, and just wana say it sucks ass.

Windows XP X64 Edition has been the unloved and overlooked middle child in the line up for some time. Drivers have always been lacking and updates quite spares. I do have to ask, why did you choose this version?

It's extremely rare for a worksation to require 4GB+ of RAM (IMHO the only really credible advantage of X64 XP) and there are hardly a lot of 64-bit only applications on Windows.

A small number of users on a platform that's already heading towards extended support means not many updates or much support, there's certainly no return to be had for Microsoft to add features or push towards XP x64 driver support.

If you want to go 64-bit then go 64-bit Vista, even then I question the need to do so and some manufacters are still being slow getting 64-bit Vista drivers out which is the main cause of Windows instability.

Even the .net framework for x64 being used on windows xp 64 has some issues. I would recomend Vista to go on 64 bits.

Seems like there will be more incompatible windows versions than linux distributionbs out there pretty soon. This may be the end of it.

Has anyone noticed that XP looks like a smiley face symbol with squeezed eyes and pulling tongues at you? Maybe Microsoft done this on purpose when they came up with the name ;-).

The Windows versioning has become as complicated - if not more complicated - than the many different Linux distros. At least the Linux disros look different. The only "easy" operating system left is Mac OS.

It's around 7 years that I hardly use Windows, don't have it on any of my PCs. I did use win95 and 98 for playing games and blitz3d. Was more or less OK I supose, never was really comfortable using it (but that's just me). I had to do some coding in Perl that was to be used in a Unix system, I started developing code in Windows but there were some issues. So in the end they lent me a very nice laptop with RedHat 4 or 5 installed on it, and after reading a manual I was given and a few phone calls to the systems manager I finished the project, by which time I realy liked it. Of course I was lucky as I got a working system and later was helped by experts to install redhat on my desktop. I have never looked back. I never felt comfortable using Windows but I'm not anti-windows or anything, it's just that I find Linux easier. But you should be aware that until windows95 computers weren't very popular and most of them sat in cupboards, yeah a few nutters like myself loved using them, but thanks to windows nowadays almost everyone has used a computer. I do think that since I first started using linux over ten years ago Linux has gone a long way and is now a much more stable, secure and friendly system than Windows (which has never integrated very well with internet) but maybe Microsoft should reconsider their position and instead of trying to fight Linux and bring out new more bloated versions of Windows, they should consider making a nice Windows desktop that could run on Linux the same as KDE or Gnome for all the people that like using Windows, I'm sure this is very posible and all windows users would be dead happy to use a more secure stable windows they have learnt to love. Even I would consider buying such a product to run some games and programs that don't run on Linux, providing the price was right. 600 euros like the latest Vista seems terribly overpriced. :)

I only use it (dual boot) these days for B3d and a few games. For everything else im much happier on Ubuntu.

Windows is a pain in the arse when you havent booted it for a week or so, As soon as you log in you have the obligatory billion popups: spyware scan, then virus update usually followed by a scan, mabe a few windows updates to do.

Meanwhile it runs like a ferrari with 8 gal. of syrup in the tank. BAH! by the time its finished with that lot and returned the PC to a useable speed its time to turn it off again!

I like Vista. It does what I want it to and it looks pretty while doing it.

I used to use Ubuntu, and liked it too, but I quit because it's too ugly, bland and brown looking for my liking.

If you want hell on earth, take Vista 64bit
otherwise use XP SP2 Pro or Vista 32Bit

64bit is nice but not for home user or anyone else outside corporate where the needed software is explicitely 64bit and the whole system was built with that in mind.

As mentioned, the driver lack and Vista64bit is a security monster, more secure than any other windows ... in the way that you can not use unsecure stuff and point.

Yeah the default brown is nasty, but gnome is super configurable (much more than windows) and it has a choice of window managers and window decorators.
I have even seen gnome looking and feeling like osx.
However, if you want serious eye candy:

Why is it, some programs will not work on 64bit? Surely it should be bakwardly compatable :/

Specifically as a gamer, 64bit is out for me. XP64 because it suxxors and Vista64 because it doesn't support my GeForce3 (whereas 32bit has WDM drivers for it).

I love Windows and I'm going to marry it.

Dan: Because some programs do not follow Microsofts Coding rules. For that reason they run into the bit protection stuff.

On 64Bit the data and program memory size have other adress rooms that on 32bit and some "clever programmers" (ie total idiots) did not use the correct flags back when creating the exes so the apps try to generate memory using the 32bit access stuff ... which just will get them a clear memory access violation for trying to put executable code into data memory and vice versa.

Can't stand Windows. OSX forever.

Lol. Are you sure thats wise?, your children may inherit the windows genes and be all expensive, overweight, insecure and will be laughed at by classmates for wearing old fashioned clothes. Not to mention in trouble all the time for being late and distracted in class by virus scans and spyware. :P

Even MacOS X makes Vista look outdated. Now that Steve Jobs is back doing what he does best, Microsoft is back to the early "catching up to Apple" moniker.
