I.P addresses

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/I.P addresses

Hi, How can i find the i.p. address of an msn contact? thanks

I'm sure there is a way to do it. I don't know how to do it.

What is the reason you want this contacts I.P Address?

Surely if you are in contact with them they may happily give it to you, unless they prefered that you didn't have it.

well i'm hoping to program an application for monitoring msn conversations over the net, hopefully for police usage if i can make it. any ideas? thanks

KeyLoggers are what you're looking for.

Aside from that I don't know of a way to get someones IP from an MSN contact.

I'm sure there'll be others though who may know how to do this. :)

Invasion of privacy, surely?

He says it's for police usage. I'm kind of taking his word for it.

ok, thanks Amon. Muzzer, it is only invasion of privacy if it was for public usage, which is not what i'm designing it for, so it is not invasion of privacy were the police are concerned (but i do appreciate your concern for the privacy of the public). thanks again.
cheers

You can 'netstat' to monitor connections, which will show MSN chats. you'd have to find out the port(s) MSN uses for chat sessions. Quite how you would relate usernames to IP's, I don't know.

Unless things have changed recently, MSN Messenger is not P2P, and the only way to get the other user's IP address used to be via a security hole, which has probably been patched by now. I completely fail to see the purpose anyway. Most of the time it *would* be illegal for the police to be using it, and at times when it wasn't, they have far better technology to do it already in their hands than some messenger ip tracker.

I was thinking that but didn't want to post anything to turn the thread in to a "He needs this info for ilegal purposes" thread.

I was thinking more along the lines of a "I'd hate to see him waste time writing something he thinks the police are going to buy from him when they already have far better technology on the occasions they're permitted to use it anyway" but I guess it's much the same, and will probably be received as you were afraid it would have been.

People have already written plenty of these apps. Not sure why the police would want an official one, coz it would surely have to be crippled down.

You can't beat Carnivore.
