Late night coding, first time in a while

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Late night coding, first time in a while

Stayed up till 2 AM last night coding a game. First time in a long time since I've done that. I seemed to just zone out, and before I knew it, I'd replaced most of the graphics in my game, and written a hundred extra lines of code, as well as fixed ten or so bugs. I put a music track on too.

Anyone else get this much?

p.s. wtf happens to time when you code? I swear an hour goes by in 5 minutes!

You call 2AM late?! :P

Seriously though, it's great when you get into a 'zone' and get loads done. Doesn't happen to me much these days, TBH. :/

Stayed up till 2 AM

That's early compared to the times some of the hardcore night time coders on this board stay up till. :)

I haven't finished work before 5am in months.

I did a 28 hour shift once to hit a deadline. :/

Never again... I hope.

I code best when it's dark, or beginning to get light :D I had to finish and hand in a project by 12pm (with a 2 hour drive needed to get there) and the night before I had a splitting headache so I went to bed at 10 and got up at 2am, coded like I dunno, something that codes really fast, had some left over curry for breakfast at 9 before driving in. Good times!

I must admit that I code best at night, but can only afford to do this when I'm not contracted to work on sight, oh well... I remember a few months ago when I ended up working from 1pm until 6am the next morning to meet a deadline - I never want to do that again :-S

Damn. You beat me by one hour!

I'm strictly 9 to 5. I think people like late night coding as 1 minute's interruption takes 10 minutes uninterruption to recover from.

bah, beat you already tonight. 2:17am.

I can't stay up like you. Too tired.

Made it to 2:30 am a while back, that was database blah for college. Funny that I found database design and gui blah the most gratifying - think it was the fact it confounded me that trying to achieve something so 'simple' took so much effort. Next day at work was a bind..... Latest I've made it for 'hobby code' has gotta be about 1 AM, although ages ago in B3D I was uo at like 4:30 AM and coding prior to work...

When I coded Holiday Bonus, I simply didn't go to bed one night, carried on through to the next night. 48 hours.

48 hours? O_O Isn't that 2 nights, though?!

yeah well spotted, you a programmer or something? It must have only been 40 hours, pah, wimpy.

I think the latest(or earliest, depends on how you think about it I suppose) I've spent coding on a weekend is 6am(ish)...

On a week night, I try to keep it down to 11pm-midnight, but now and again, it can sneak to 2am if I'm in the mood, as you dont notice the time tick by.

Though, I'm bloody knackered the next day at work! :)

Yeah, I work at home but I still can't stay up late because have kids that get up and need to go to school etc. I frequently turn up at school looking like some kinda half-drunk unshaven dad from hell...but I'm pretty sure the mums still fancy me ;-)

you wish :)

As an insomniac I rarely follow the normal day/night cycle and so can often be found coding long into the night/morning.

Roughly nine days is the longest I've been without sleep. Although I didn't do any coding in that time. I was just sat around like a zombie by the end of it.

I would of died! :)

Hello.

You all need girlfriends. Badly. :o)

Goodbye.

Was kind of thinking the same. 8o)

I went to bed 6am this morning. Been coding on a "Battleship" game using MiniB3D the whole night.
It's great when you sit in front of the keyboard and code just flows from your hands and into the computer and there is no giant bugs or problems stealing time and energy.

I have a girlfriend. We share a flat and three cats. :)
Edit: And don't tell me to get a job or something, I have two already. :P

That's putting your health at risk - and I'll wager you were using 'stimulants' to keep yourself awake.

and I'll wager you were using 'stimulants' to keep yourself awake.

Yep, it's all the rage these days to use stimulants to keep yourself awake. In the old days you had to make do with matchsticks, but now they inject viagra into your eyelids.

By 'stimulants' I mean something a bit harder than coffee.

You probably missed that thread a while ago that I started (it got deleted) about a friend of a friend who broke the world record for staying awake for 11 days. He did it without stimulants, he ate a raw food diet and had helpers on hand to make sure he didn't fall asleep.

Did they shout "Wake up you lazy bum!" whenever he started to fall asleep and jab at him with pointy poking sticks? That'd be a great job!

I've never seen the point of staying up late to work. It's inefficient.

something like that!

For me, I can work quite well in the night as I'm uninterruped by phone and family, but only to certain point, then, yeah I'm too tired and you slow down.

I didn't want to stay awake, I just couldn't sleep. Insomnia is a strange feeling, you're as tired as hell yet can't get to sleep. Most of the time I just end up sitting staring into space, too tired to do anything constructive. It's not very nice.

That's probably when your brains sleeps. (takes a timeout.. hehe) :p

I don't see how anyone with a wife and/or kids is continuously working all nighters and maintaining decent relationships.

I worked from 12 midnight until 5 am last night...

of course I have a third shift job where I have 6 hours to kill. (the other hour was spent eating, and reading :D)

I did all nighters (with kids + girlfriend) when I first got BPlus nearly 3 years ago but my health was the main thing to suffer from lack of sleep. Got tons of colds and aches and pains etc. I try not too now but if I have the odd late nighter, I get "silly Jake" said to me and a 50/50 chance if I'll be able to persuade Helen to let me have lie in.... :-)

The first two hours in the morning (for me, 11am to 1pm) are best for fixing bugs. I get all of the unpleasant work done during that period.

Then the more creative work happens from 8pm to 2am.

I did a game in 24 hours straight once: Dead Man's 31. I guess that's why it's rather surreal.

So did I, well, say 14 hours! :D

I've lost the source now though, I havent a clue where its gone, so if a bug rears its ugly head, erm, so be it! :D

I used to be able to stay up till 8am, but things just aren't as exciting anymore..

once i coded till 8 AM...

I'm on a roll tonight, except for one STUPID bug that cost me 30 minutes.

Well, I'm mainly coding by 9:30 in the morning until around 5:00 or so here... I mean, that's alright, and maybe longer during the weekends, and even tomorrow being a holiday, I may probably spend some extra time. I'm on second shift at another job, so between this and that, I'm all right. Just tough to make two jobs come together at once like this.
