Can anyone recommend a good book for starting pixel art?

A book? While I'm not really a pixel-artist, I've taught myself pixeling by just doing it. Those pixel-artists I know certainly didn't need any books, and they work in the industry. With 2d there are concepts like anti-aliasing, dithering, setup a palette (in case you use palettes) etc. But all that can be found on the net I think, heck I'm sure that when you ask here, ppl can explain all of that. So exactly what do you wish to find in a book? How to draw anatomy? How to choose colors? Or how Photoshop/Paintshop/<any> works?

I think that the best way to learn is by studying, imitating, and modifying pixel art that impresses you. Build up experience and move on to creating original stuff.

I'm a big believer that you can't be taught an art, you have to learn and improve by doing.

that site's going on my bookmark list.

I've not found any how to photoshop books that cover pixel art in depth, however I've found one that has some information:

Extreme Photoshop CS by Matt Kloskowski

There are some fan books of pixel artists on Amazon as well. A few good ones come out of Europe. I don't remember their titles right off.

Haven't seen any books on pixelling but...

it was along time ago when I read it but I seem to recall it being a good read... it didnt infuse me with any more talent but at least I had a better understanding of why my work is rubbish :)

I found this book nice (making Mangas with Photoshop and Painter)

Thanks for the help everyone!
I'm not sure who created it but I've been playing around with a mega man like character and its animation.

@CS_TBL
I think I find the most difficulty in shaping character's outlines.

@JustLuke
Okay, thanks for the advice.

@Raz
Thanks, that's a nice tutorial. It was really helpful!

@Cartman
Thanks for the advice and ideas! Though, I don't own Photoshop and I'd like to use free or cheap programs.

@Muzzer
Thank you, these look useful.

@QuietBloke
Thanks, I'll into it...

@xMicky
Thanks, but I can't read german :)

If you're woried about the character's outline then you don't really need 2d/pixel books, instead you need anatomy/drawing books, which are common at good book shops. I think there are, for example, how-to-draw-anime-books in about every language, some of those books also attend monster-drawing 'n such. Of course: Google also contains a rich source of websites related to drawing. And the odd eBook about manga you could spot on p2p might also be of help.

Then I'm going to continue playing around with other's art and study proportions and anatomy and soon I might have something! Thanks for you help.
