Vista and Directsound

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Vista and Directsound

Anybody else tried this? Because I just have and it works perfectly as far as I can tell.

Apparently its no longer hardware-accelerated, but it does work.

Basic functionality is there if you don't mind that any game that you play on Vista that uses DirectSound (pretty much all of them) will now be reduced to standard stereo only.

There's a good article on it here:

Basically Microsoft are trying to move everyone onto their new proprietry sound API that's not compatible with Direct Sound.

If you've got a Creative X-Fi card then you can use Alchemy to convert the game to use OPENAL otherwise nothing.

Being that Creative are the ONLY company to have been shafted by Vista's new sound implementation (the only company to have 100% hardware based sound acceleration), I think it wholly innapropriate to take THEIR word for it.

As far as the sound API goes, it's pretty much the same as it has always been, except there is no hardware pass thru for DirectSound apps anymore. The new system is designed around Intel's HD audio standards, so is hardly a MS proprietary API.

Creative have already released a (beta) workaround that reroutes game DirectSound calls via OpenGL (which has full hardware acceleration capability as always), so there is really no point in the whining. Just Creative trying to cry about them being singled out basically.

Is it noisy and horrid on Vista too? Are you thinking of using it instead of OpenAL then?
