http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HvuTtrkVtnsCan view a video of it being demoed there, in addition to Carmack discussing the purpose of it and such. As far as I'm concerned, they're still the most artist-friendly developers out there with the direct export and such of models (unlike UE and Source where you have to jump through hoops to do it).
I'm still worried about things like disk-space when it comes to the megatexture actually being put to use in games...., multi-disc DVD installations anyone?
[EDIT] Heck, I wonder how many layers are even used on the megatexture, I mean, you'd need one for the alpha channel and normal mapping as well....
When I think id Software, I still think Apogee and Wolfenstein and Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure and Commander Keen. Man, those are some great memories.

I don't worry mega textures anymore since I downloaded and installed Vanguard ... 20GB? ;-)
You're worried about a measly 20gb? I've got a terrabyte in my PC. :-)
You can by a 1TB SATA drive now for only $400. And by the time Id's game comes out, they'll probably be less than $200.
What I'd be worried about is the installation time. My sister's husband was installing some game on DVD and we went out for a walk and an hour later the installation was less than 50% complete.
Hehe no I'm not worried, I've 1.4TB of space.
Its more like: how long do you think it took me to download the 9GB trial install split into 4 2.X GB files? ^^
I don't think it will be a problem to store the data on the disc. I think you will need 2GB RAM to run this smoothly =) But it's cool and I'm happy to see Carmack is still working on new technology for id software.
