Help! Installed fonts require CD to work!

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Help! Installed fonts require CD to work!

I purchase da couple font CD's a while back, and I have installed some fonts from both only to discover that the fonts from each only work when their respective font CD is in the CDROM drive.

When I installed the font I specified that the filed be copied to the windows font directory. The files appear to be there. They do not appear to be shortcuts. I can move the font file out of the font folder and it looks normal. But the windows font viewer still shows all the characters as blank and no truetype data. The file size is the same as the font on the CD.

In other words in every way, it appears that the .TTF files were copied correctly, but unless the CDROM is in the drive, none of the characters or data about the font appears in either the windows font previewer, or my font management program, or anywhere else.

Furthermore, simply copying the font file from the CD instead of using a font management utility results in the same issue. I copy the file 03.ttf to my C:\ folder and it copies and previews fine. Then I remove the CD, and try to preview the file again and the data's gone! Put the CD back in, and the data's back!

What the heck is going on? Does windows XP have some kind of shortcut files which don't look like shortcuts, and does it treat all fonts copied as these? Or is there some kind of truetype copy protection built into Windows XP?

No, idea if this helps, but it's a good read: http://www.andrew.cmu.edu/user/twm/embed/dmca.html

Is this a DRM CD? or just a collection od Fonts?

Any Example to post? Even one font for testing is OK..

Fred:
Yeah, I found that. Doesn't do anything to solve the issue.

Yoko:
Well, since the file appears to be empty, I guess there isn't any harm in uploading it. :-)

[file removed]

File uploaded fine, but renaming it and redownloading it still didn't make the font appear.

It's a font CD. I don't think there's any DRM on it, there doesn't appear to be. I didn't run the installer or anything. But I do seem to have autorun turned on. It's possible it might have installed something. But BOTH CD's from different publishers exhibiting the same behavior? I kinda doubt it's DRM in that case. More likely some windows XP weirdness.

Double-clicked on the font on my desktop - fontviewer can open it just fine.

2 secs will try to install it.

[edit] Yep - it installs and works as normal, too.

Swift, the font works on my system, and wasn't disappear.

It should be the system issue I guess.

Argh!

I checked the font section of the registry everything looks normal for the fonts I installed...

FIXED!

I just rebooted my system and now everything is normal.

I didn't think rebooting would help because another font I thought I'd installed had gone missing, and I had this same problem a long time ago, but the other font may have been in use before I reinstalled XP some months ago, and that is why it dissapeared. As for what happened a long time ago, I don't remember how that was resolved.

But it works now, so yay.

I wonder why I had to reboot to get it to work though? That doesn't make sense.

Possibly windows was caching the original font + location, if you viewed it first from the CD before installing?

I tought they fixed that since Windows NT / 2000 / XP !
