Anti-keyloggers

Anyone know a good (preferably free) anti-keylogger? I have a friend who has reason to believe she is being spyed on, and I'm trying to help her out.

Edit: This is for Windows XP. Also, anyone know a good free and easy to use encryption tool I could recommend to her?

Have you tried ad-aware or Spybot S&D? They are anti-spyware programs.

Hijackthis might help as well.

I'll try to do some addtional research on other ways to detect key logging.

Well, she's at home for a while and it's her parents that are doing it, so she can't actually erase the keylogger (lest they find out), but instead just needs to disable the keylogging.

Can't you just kill the key logger process using ctrl-alt-del? If it's a physical key logger then you just unplug it from the keyboard port, or use a different keyboard. Key loggers usually only work because the victim is unaware of it.

Thanks for the link Jason. She's not very technically inclined by nature so I think the methods mentioned in there might help.

Oddball: I haven't gotten a chance to ask her for a rundown of all running processes, as she just told me this before she signed off. Anyways, I figured any decent keylogger would either hide itself or restart itself if shut down, much like a lot of malware manages to do.

Thanks for the suggestions. I won't talk to her until tomorrow but hopefully some of this will work. I don't think they're actually looking at keylogs of everything, but instead using it just to get access to her passwords for various things (windows login, e-mail, chat software, etc.)

The solution in this particular case will depend on the actual keylogger being used.

She is at risk of being caught out - what keylogger are they using? I assume this is a commercial product which may be part of a monitoring system (such as 'Net Nanny').

A bypass is required.

More parents should take an interest in what their kids are getting upto online (and in general, while we're on the subject).

I'm with puki on this one. If it's their computer they have most likely installed more than just a key logger. What exactly is she doing that she doesn't want her parents to know about? And if she's been discussing it on-line with you then her parents will know soon enough that she's trying to bypass the monitoring software.

Oddball does bring up a good point. Also, I noticed that Wikipedia's ideas in general didn't seem very helpful. Click every key with an on-screen keyboard rather than typing?

Maybe if I'm a spy... otherwise I'd just stop doing my illegal Jell-O smuggling business on that computer if I was her.

Also like mentioned earlier HijackThis is an excellent tool for detecting and/or getting rid of unwanted software that tried to hide from you.

As for encryption software, it doesn't get much better than GNU Privacy Guard.
