Free Royalty Free Background Images Exist?

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Free Royalty Free Background Images Exist?

Does anybody know of any good websites where they provide good abstract background images for level backgrounds in games etc. for free? ;-)

I'd have thought you'd have to pay if you wanted to insert them in a game but I thought I'd ask anyway if the community know of some good resources just in case that wasn't the case?

Thanks

Seb

Didn't leadwerks post a site like this the other day? Dunno if they're royalty free tho'.

I think it was this one he posted about wallpapers:-

Not sure they are good for games though

Depending on the game: pretty much all of the astronomy imagery on NASA and ESA's websites are public domain, so if you're looking for nebula's and the like for a space-based game, that's definitely a place to check.

Thanks for all your replies - I'll have a look through them now!

So you can't use them, but you could always ask if you found something you liked.

Thanks Gabriel for checking out that wallpapers site - they have some really nice ones on there I downloaded for my desktop and would have liked to use them if I could.

I've tried e-mailing and asking before but as soon as they hear the word *game*, they get dollar signs in their eyes and not the reasonable dollar signs I'd be willing to pay either for a small freeware game!

Yes, sadly I'm familiar with this experience. I wouldn't be put off entirely, as I have been pleasantly surprised a few times when asking as well. You'll probably have to email more than you want and hope some are reasonable, but it is still worth a shot.

You can always count on TerraGen for professional-looking background images, just set the camera on any part of the terrain environment that looks to sparkle, and that will provide you with something right there. Just render and capture that image, touch it up in Photoshop, and that's your background image.

Well you can if you've got a TerraGen license. Images created with it are not royalty-free unless you buy a Terragen License.
