Youtube on AppleTV

Saw this today and just thought "hmmm, I've done that for ages!".

I've been watching you tube, full screen on my widescreen telly for six months, using a my £40 modded xbox, I also directly stream dvd quality movie downloads and can view the apple trailers directly over the net from the xbox.

What can appleTV do that an XBox can't?

Oh, I also watch gaemtrailers.com on my telly using the xbox, the quality is excellent!

The average consumer wont have an XBox, never mind a modded one, which is who AppleTV is targeted to.

so the average consumer has an AppleTV? It's weird, sometimes you can forget the average joe bloggs thinks different o the geek kind :-)

My main point iwas that I'm doing the same thing with something you pick up for £40 at game, and not having to spedn £400 on something from Apple

I just use a tele, freeview box and an aerial... the freeview box decodes the signal from the aerial and the tele projects bile and puss into my lounge.

Now if everyone already had an AppleTV, Apple wouldn't be interested in marketing the device ;-). Yeah, I agree with what you say, but there are 2 things in Apple's advantage:

* Joe public doesn't know about modding an X-Box... and many wont event know what an X-Box is...

* AppleTV is a specialised device for the purpose; exactly why iPod still isn't beaten by the phones with built in MP3 players, etc.

* Apple is an iconic brand and AppleTV has a sleak design. I'm sure most consumers would rather have a sleak AppleTV in their living room than a chunky X-Box. It's all about image.

oh no, I'm not trying to knock the AppleTV box, I'm just saying that I found it funny seeing that as I've already been doing this type of thing for ages.

It'd be like Microsoft making a big fuss saying they've brought out a programming language aimed at people at home to make they're own games when we've had blitz for years.

So really I'm saying geeks are ahead of the curve when it comes to cool features on home devices.

lol, the Geeks get the technology first and then Apple do what they do best; make it cool so that Joe Public wants one too. MP3 players weren't really cool until Apple launched the iPod... Computers weren't really for the home until Apple relased the AppleII... Maybe the only exception is with phones... ;-)

I'm assuming it can play high quality H.264 streams. I know my modded XBox can't handle them very well.

Other than that, you have the convience of iTunes and the store, not having to know how to edit XML files and use an FTP client, and not having to have two torx screwdrivers, steady hands and good eyesight.
