I could never accept all that arm waving (in Minority Report) as being ergonomically sound. It looks cool, but imagine waving your arms around all day just in order to do computer work - you'd have OSH issues up the wazzoo.

Yup, somebody who does user interface design for a living said that would be a nightmare in real life. Not only the arm waving, but also that people are not very good at focusing in the middle of the air - generally they need a surface to work with.
That's why it isn't all arm waving. If it was just arm waving, I would also be quite uninterested.
In one demo I watched, someone used a paint brush instead of his fingers to draw on the screen, and the output was exactly as though he was using it to paint for real - with the same smooth effect and shapely ends that you get from a quick brush stroke.
The idea of connecting devices under one interface with one single optical input is neat, and in the case of digital cameras (Picture Transfer Protocol), very possible in a generic way.

I was only commenting on the Interface shown in Minority Report. I have not watched any of the stuff about the new MS Surface.

It'd look better with an LCD than a projector though. You can figure out how to get the camera to work through the LCD :P
