Mailing lists - how?

This is one for the hopefully imminent 'Indie' forum, but since it doesn't exist yet...

I'm thinking about setting up a mailing list but I'm a bit stumped.

cPanel seems to have mailing list support but apart from being grossly complicated, it doesn't seem to be what I need. I want people to fill in a simple form and automatically add their e-mail address to a list. I don't want them to have to mess about with passwords, and I don't want anybody but me to be able to send emails to the mailing list.

How should I approach this? I want it to manage itself, ideally.

I used to use YMLP.

It handles all the signup stuff for you, and - perhaps more importantly - your domain doesn't get blacklisted for sending bulk emails. It has double opt-in and all that. It's dead easy to use.

Thx - got it set up pretty quickly. I have a trial account set up so I'll see how the signups go before I proceed any further with it.

Everybody seems to suggest YMLP (I've asked in other places, too).

A big concern seems to be that sending bulk e-mails can get you blacklisted.

I did e-mail my hosting provider to ask about configuring the HTML pages Mailman uses so I can set it up to match my site. Their reply of "what HTML pages?" meant I couldn't be bothered pursuing that avenue any more.

Might have a look at PHPList one day as a "plan B". :)

I'm interested in this too (for another of my businesses). We tried out Awebber (seems very comprehensive and is used by lots of Internet Marketers) but it won't let you populate the database with more than 20 or so addresses that you have already. This is to help prevent spam. We have a couple of hundred that we want to add so may checkout YMLP. I don't when any open source things as we don't want to do any coding.
