Forum request: Indie forums for serious developers

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Forum request: Indie forums for serious developers

There are quite a number of people I can think of who post here that are actively making games and getting them out into the public arena.

Any possibility of opening up a new forum section for such people to discuss serious development, compatibility publishing and marketing issues?

I think it'd be a valuable addition to the site and would keep people from wandering off looking for alternatives. It would also make the Blitz family of products look a lot more 'grown up' than some of the discussion topics the site currently offers - the place seems like a creche at times.

Any posts of a serious nature often get lost in the mire. One example springs to mind - I recently asked about Armadillo and Blitzmax compatibility. The only reply I got was from somebody who later admitted he did not even know what Armadillo was. O_O So why reply?

I think its fair to say that some people take Blitz and games development a LOT more seriously than others, and there needs to be a defined border between the two.

I'm not sure that this is a good idea. Since these forums are intended to be used by blitz customers they should aim to be inclusive rather than exclusive. Besides, aren't there alternative forums elsewhere that limit discussions to serious topics?

I think GfK has a good idea. I more like see it as an"addition" to BlitzResearch than that it would do bad. Because "yay, i have a game build thigy" now "what do i do when it made something with it?" and find out like "go somewhere else, bye".
I wouldn't say BR had to support such a forum, but allowing it to take place wouldn't hurt anyone.

Why not start your own. Build the stage and the bands will come... mabe :/ free and because youre in control you can be as free or totalitarian as you like.

I prefer the free speech approach myself, its more popular, but prehaps an additional strict on-topic only forum may be a good idea. I wouldnt want to loose GD as its an interesting and humourous place sometimes (however wierd the posts get :)

I'm not sure that this is a good idea. Surely, since these forums are intended to be used by blitz customers, they should aim to be inclusive rather than exclusive. Besides, aren't there alternative forums elsewhere that limit discussions to serious topics?

Gfk is not looking to change the whole forum, but add an extra area to it. I'm with him on this one and would welcome such an addition to these forums.

True, there are other places to go for general information or help, such as the IndieGamer forums, but I would find a Blitz specific one extremely helpful, as I'm sure so would the other serious coders around here.

This definately gets my vote.

Yes, there's IndieGamer, but a blitz-specific forum would probably be more productive. Not that I'd be able to participate... :P

I think it's a great idea, have a bunch of stickies at the top with lists of publishers, generic eulas, contract advice - what to look for etc. Pros and Cons of various methods of distribution etc etc. It's all good.

These questions are frequently asked in general because they don't have a home and the answers ultimately get buried.

Sounds like a good idea to me.

Yeah another section could be useful and may add some credence to the product which many view as "hobbyist" only.

Of course there's still Indiegamer and even Game Producers insiders for noise free discussion (but that's a subscription service).

I support Robs idea too! Such stickies are good!

Yeah another section could be useful and may add some credence to the product which many view as "hobbyist" only.
You reckon that's really what people think of Blitz??

Of course there's still Indiegamer
There's a lot of hot air on Indiegamer, I reckon. You never know who to believe.

I've visited a few times. Don't feel the urge to go there much, now.

There are quite a number of people I can think of who post here that are actively making games and getting them out into the public arena.
I think most of the people here are trying to do that...

Any possibility of opening up a new forum section for such people to discuss serious development, compatibility publishing and marketing issues?
All those discussions should go here in this forum so all can learn and give input.

I think it'd be a valuable addition to the site and would keep people from wandering off looking for alternatives. It would also make the Blitz family of products look a lot more 'grown up' than some of the discussion topics the site currently offers - the place seems like a creche at times.
I think it would divide the community and let a few people put themselves above everyone else. This is the blitz community where we should all be perceived as equal, not a "hey I made a game so I get to post in this special forum and you can't"....that's nonsense.

Any posts of a serious nature often get lost in the mire. One example springs to mind - I recently asked about Armadillo and Blitzmax compatibility. The only reply I got was from somebody who later admitted he did not even know what Armadillo was. O_O So why reply?
The Search feature works quite well. Plus, there's no guarantee to a response. If you don't get one then you probably posted in the wrong forum.

I think its fair to say that some people take Blitz and games development a LOT more seriously than others, and there needs to be a defined border between the two.
True, and they've been co-existing as a community quite well for years. There's no reason to separate and label people as the cool crowd and the losers who can't make a game. Because that's all this would do. Also, kinda weird for you to bring up something like this when you just made a thread called "Cold drinks and programming". That's not a "serious" topic now is it?

I think most of the people here are trying to do that...
Are they? Its a hobby for most people - people who never have and never intend to finish/release/sell anything.

not a "hey I made a game so I get to post in this special forum and you can't"
I didn't say anybody should be restricted from using it.

All those discussions should go here in this forum so all can learn and give input.

The Search feature works quite well. Plus, there's no guarantee to a response. If you don't get one then you probably posted in the wrong forum.
I posted it in the Blitzmax forum which WAS the wrong forum. It should have gone in the Indie forum, which we don't yet have.

True, and they've been co-existing as a community quite well for years. There's no reason to separate and label people as the cool crowd and the losers who can't make a game. Because that's all this would do.
Hang on... I'm not suggesting we reintroduce apartheid here! I just don't want to wade through 50 "I like caek!" threads to get to the stuff that matters.

My suggestion is merely a subdivision of the forums that are already here - a forum which everyone can access. I never had any intention of segregating people.

Also, kinda weird for you to bring up something like this when you just made a thread called "Cold drinks and programming". That's not a "serious" topic now is it?
No. Therefore I posted it in the General Discussion forum. I'm surprised you needed to ask.

The mian reasonIm against this idea, is that most of the posts will be from ppl who have no idea at all about whats going on.

Surly you would be better, (When it comes to the selling/marketing/contracting part) to actualy be on a site where more than 2% of the posters have finished something

Also, A BRL sponsored/hosted thread would start to look a bit indicon-y for my liking, and it would (possibly), have a negative affect on the conceptual image of BRL.

I think it would divide the community and let a few people put themselves above everyone else. This is the blitz community where we should all be perceived as equal, not a "hey I made a game so I get to post in this special forum and you can't"....that's nonsense.

But GfKs idea was a public forum right? if not, i do not support it :-P cause than what is the purpose of having it only available to "the select". I agree with you that it does have to be a public forum.

Are they? Its a hobby for most people - people who never have and never intend to finish/release anything.
More people than you think are attempting to finish and release games. To alienate them would be idiotic.

I didn't say anybody should be restricted from using it.
And then:
I think its fair to say that some people take Blitz and games development a LOT more seriously than others, and there needs to be a defined border between the two.
And then:
I'm not suggesting we reintroduce apartheid here!
You're jumping around all over the place here. ie...Make up your mind.

I posted it in the Blitzmax forum which WAS the wrong forum. It should have gone in the Indie forum, which we don't yet have.
GA used armadillo, send him an email.

I just don't want to wade through 50 "I like caek!" threads to get to the stuff that matters.
This makes the most sense and if this was the actual reason for the Indie forum then I would support it 100%.

From what I understand, GFK is suggesting there should be another forum section, much like General or Showcase, or Graphics showcase. This would simply be a place to hold information and discuss where, how, and who to go to if you've got a complete or near complete product and want to sell/distrubute it.

There are many people on here with experience of selling and/or distributing games, and indeed people on here who supply said services.

Love or loath the moderators they have the power to sticky / unsticky topics or delete individual posts therefore in the sticky topics I suggested at the top of the section there would be only decent information and not hearsay.

I don't really understand why anyone is against this idea. It simply means topics such as these that get started all the time will not get lost in the fug of other posts eg Fizzing drinks and coding.

To quote Jack Nicholson from Mars Attacks
"Why can't we work out our differences? Why can't we work things out? Little people, why can't we all just get along?"

GA used armadillo, send him an email.
I didn't reply to the thread because I never use Inc Bin.

You're jumping around all over the place here. ie...Make up your mind.
"A defined border", as GfK puts it, doesn't mean restriction. It just means another thread where less "general" posts will occur and thus it will be a valuable resource for anyone on this forum who is interested in publishing their games.

You reckon that's really what people think of Blitz??
Maybe I should have said some instead of many. But I know that many people use blitz for a hobby only. Some of them might still be interested in the new forum but that's fine.

There's a lot of hot air on Indiegamer, I reckon. You never know who to believe.
There's a lot of hot air round here too, I guess it's inescapable unless you pay to subscribe to a professional forum. My partner Helen subscribes to one for writers and the noise/flaming etc is basically nil.

I wonder if some of the other people who've made commercial games but who hardly every post will post in the new forum. Then again, maybe their secret to success is that they DON'T visit forums ;-)

"A defined border", as GfK puts it, doesn't mean restriction. It just means another thread where less "general" posts will occur and thus it will be a valuable resource for anyone on this forum who is interested in publishing their games.
GA, you just repeated what I said above...

You know what??

I recently signed a contract with a portal to get my game a bit of exposure. I asked them if they wanted me to save game data to CSIDL_COMMON_APPDATA. You might remember we had a big-ass conversation about it a while ago.

Know what they said?

"Nah, LOCAL_APPDATA is fine!" - basically meaning silly multi-user folder permissions were a non-issue after all.

...and after I'd gone to all that hassle! Teach me to listen to noise on forums. That's exactly why this needs to be avoided in the future. I wasted about 3 days of my life figuring it out!

I'm glad that at least SOME people can appreciate why having all this information readily to hand would be a good idea!

Since Blitz was released on PC, its gone way beyond what it ever was in previous incarnations. Its time everybody woke up to this fact.

Well since no one's suggesting it is exclusive to a given group, I support this idea. Reckon it would be useful to have it separate as it's quite a big topic of discussion.

I would like the idea of a more 'programming for publishing' section of the forum. I do agree that loads of interesting posts get lost in the quagmire that is the rest of the forum. As the search functions dont really help much when searching out stuff it would be prudent to have a section where like minded programmers can go to discuss publishing, programming and serious issues with Blitz.

Okey, if i can summarize all this. Most people want a "Indie, the how too's" forum, where people can exchange tips, tricks, knowlage, and experiance about common subjects involved with "going public".
I also support this idea.

Appart from all alternatives outside the community, it would in my opinion, and as i read, that of quite a few... be a good idea to have such a forum at BR. Now, lets talk about that, or get it done... so we acutaly dont have to talk about it, and get started right away. Saves us a lot fo time, and it can only be helpfull.

@BlitzResearch, can this be arranged? thank you!

You have my vote GFK. I would value having information like that to learn from. Great idea!

Wot 'e sed.

Hobbyist though I currently am, this would be an excellent information resource that would (potentially) be much more accessible than traipsing through every other forum for the nuggets of info. The main difference such a forum would need to differentiate it from any other here would be more strict moderation to keep the signal-to-noise high... and that would be fine too.

GA, you just repeated what I said above...
sigh

So as for putting this into action...do BRL need an email or does Simon(?) need to know about it as he normally does the forum tweaks?

Just what the mods need, another forum to moderate... I don't think it's really necessary imo. Ask the questions here. The posts don't really move that fast and the Search feature works great.

While on the surface it's a nice idea, it could be un-workable.

Who decides who is a serious developer worthy of posting in the forum?
What's to stop anyone posting pointless stuff in the new forum anyway?
Who's going to moderate it and who decides what content is serious?

To some it may smell a little of elitism.

I feel any such forum would run the risk of borderline outbursts, for example member X posts a message, member Y is a newbie but interested in the post and asks a question and others join in. Immediately the "serious developer" forum is no longer a serious developers forum only.

While I agree a section on these forums for serious developers is a nice idea I really do think it'll cause more issues than it'll solve.

If such a forum section were to be made it would need a very firm set of rules and very active moderation.

I think the open-ended nature of these forums - meaning the wide range of users (i.e. serious -> hobbyists and dabblers) means keeping a 'serious devs only' forum would be problematic. Call it 'osmosis' - not to mention the disruption caused by some of the catfights I've seen on these boards.

However I would be in favour of a topic devoted to the marketing of games. By its nature this topic might be of less interest to 'dabblers' and of more interest to those with an on-going project they fully expect to finish.

After all, there's a wealth of technical info on these boards about creating games, but for info regarding marketing, you have to trawl through the general forum or go elsewhere.

'To some it may smell a little of elitism. '

Well, sometimes a little 'elitism' is not a bad thing. Commercial quality work can be produced with blitz3d/blitzmax - perhaps the website could reflect that a little more, while not losing its egalitarian roots.

Well said MadJack. I think a forum featuring more of the business/marketing/polishing/distribution aspect of development would be a good thing. I say that, however, being the person who rattled Gfk's cage when he asked about armadillo ;-D

'being the person who rattled Gfk's cage'

Heh - should watch that, you'll lose a hand that way ;-)

Im still not up for the idea of a forum.
However I can see the value in the information that would be hidden amongst the dross of such a forum. How about a new Tab at the top, that had Production/Publication essays?
Which then could be posted to and commented on.

That is instead of a forum board, more of an information repositry, bit like the code achives.

In essance you could then only start the quivelent of a "Thread" if you pubblished an essay/tip sheet

i'd say: just try it. if it works, fine. if not, delete the new board..

Who decides who is a serious developer worthy of posting in the forum?
Charge. Do an MSDN type thing, and charge enough (like say 5K USD) to keep out those who aren't dead serious.

What's to stop anyone posting pointless stuff in the new forum anyway?
Because you can't unless you subscribe?

Who's going to moderate it and who decides what content is serious?
I would think anyone willing to put down 5K a year is going to be highly motivated to keep it serious.

To some it may smell a little of elitism.
Not at all - different types of customers have different needs and wants. I think it's a good idea and I'm completely in favour of it.

I don't think there needs to be any elitism or crazy moderation. Simply this: Here's a forum that *anyone* who's interested can post about topics related to publishing Indie games. Any posts which are not about publishing Indie games will be deleted. Plus the normal forum rules about no swearing and flaming can be obeyed. If someone acts up then the other forum members will probably tell them what the score is. Simple. I'm pretty sure that's all GfK meant (correct me if I'm wrong) and everyone else just made it complicated.

@FlameDuck, seriously? are you going to pay 5K a year if you are a total n00b at such things? give me a break.
Only people that can afford it may do it and those are useualy "the experts".

everyone else just made it complicated.

Nothing new there! ;D

Seriously though, I think a BDN (Blitz Developer Network) Lisence would actually be a good thing. Though, there will have to be major benefits apart from the use of a single forum, like access to beta's, support (e.g. 24 hours), and all that...

5k is a tadge steep mind Flame, I think the most expensive MSDN subscripion is about $2500, though dont quote me on that, but you probably will anyway! ;)

It might actually raise BRL's bank balance a bit more where they could contract programmers in.

I'll be keeping my eye on this, the possibilities are endless, yet, more than likely, it will fall on deaf ears (Or will I be proved wrong, lol).

Dabz

For a 5k subscription you'll receive daily worklog updates from Mark.

You can use these exclusive updates to torment the 'common rabble';-)

correct me if I'm wrong
You're not wrong. :)

There's no need for this to cost anybody anything! It won't even use more bandwidth for BRL since the posts we're currently dotting around all over the place will simply be posted in a different, more suitable place to begin with.

It's simple: we need more forum categories. That's it and that's all.

- business talk
- soundfx/music

the sfx/music one is a good idea too.

Yeah this whole paying thing is wacko.

I think it is a very good idea. The idea of Flameduck to charge for being a member of this forum will prevent non professional coders to take part of it. I think it is also a good idea, but I would suggest something different.

I would center the focus of this forum to Game distribution and marketing. Centering the forum in the kind of thinks that involve selling games will not prevent newbies to post but will focus the whole forum in the desired direction IMHO.

Questions as the Armadillo one, or things releated to compatibility issues when the game is finally distributed can also be placed there.

If this is ever made, please don't make a difference on 'serious' and 'non serious' coder. I've seen some hobbiest codes that work much better than some 'serious' ones. And I'm sure I'm not the only one who has seen this...

I'm "dead serious", but I wouldn't pay $5,000 for it.

I'm "dead serious", but I wouldn't pay $5,000 for it.

The Euro-USD exchange rate must be good in Euroland! ;)

Dabz

Sounds good. So how about some new topic areas?

- Deploying Blitz apps / games
- Publishing and Business
- Services for hire (portfolios)
- Help wanted

I think that's too much sonicfactory, i'm voting for the marketing/business forum though.

yay, back where we left off.
so, did anyone e-mail BlitzResearch already? I really hope this will workout :-)
I have no clue who to contact, so don't ask me :-P

Charge. Do an MSDN type thing, and charge enough (like say 5K USD) to keep out those who aren't dead serious.

Well, there goes all the profits from the last game we made... Wouldn't really be an indie forum if the indies couldn't post there..... One would think that having a game on a portal, or a finished product would be enough to say your an indie developer. Partially finished pieces wouldn't cut it... Just have one person (or two) sign an NDA for whomever is joining, and evaluate if the game is a finished product, and bam, membership.

@FlameDuck, seriously? are you going to pay 5K a year if you are a total n00b at such things?
Yes seriously. I've paid a lot more for a lot less, and this isn't targeted towards the "n00bs" it's targeted towards professionals.

5k is a tadge steep mind Flame
It's less than one months salary - and it's tax deductible (in DK anyway). Provided you make more than 5K USD a year (which any professional would), it's effectively free.

I'm "dead serious", but I wouldn't pay $5,000 for it.
I don't think we've got the same definition of dead serious then.

Well, there goes all the profits from the last game we made... Wouldn't really be an indie forum if the indies couldn't post there.
I don't see how you can claim to be a professional developer if you're making less than 5K USD a year. Maybe if you worked in Lithuania or something but there's no way you could reasonably live off that little in Western Europe or the US.

I think the forum would be better suited to all that 'information' that people need to get published and the thing that they can put together to make a good game (Music, pictures etc).

I don't see how you can claim to be a professional developer if you're making less than 5K USD a year. Maybe if you worked in Lithuania or something but there's no way you could reasonably live off that little in Western Europe or the US.

Your missing the point. The point of the thread was for a serious indie forum. Not an AAA game makers forum (they have plenty of those). Regardless of how much I make personally on a development contract, or the game makes, as long as I have a finish product that is selling to a portal or other then I consider myself a professional game developer (Independant, but a professional none the less).

As for living off the sales of the games I have made, I don't. My games have been contracts, and in that are not my property to sell or rip profits from. I have done the coding from start to finish on them, and even a small bit of asset creation/modification.

Lastly most of us (perhaps with the exception of yourself and a few others) have families to feed, houses to maintain, hobbies to enjoy, and a plethura of other areas that 5k could go to over membership to some 'exclusive' forum where developers with huge egos such as yourself can continually find ways to weed the lesser from professional existance.

As for being a professional developer, I currently do .net work as a full time job (the old 8-5) for a global company. It decorates my resume and is the reason I got the job in the first place. Is it for games, no, its for a business that has better things to do than play video games.. So professional developer - yes, games developer - yes, willing to spend even 1k a year to some stupid club to be considered a pro by others, no.

I still say as long as you have completed one project, just one, your an indie developer (serious developer) and are allowed to speak on any issue. Those who haven't completed a project (perhaps have the community vote on membership) usually have lots of theories, and ideas, that aren't relevant to the industry or how it functions. Those are the people you want to keep out, those who really have no clue because they haven't spent 2-3 years on a project to have it just be returned by a portal with "We don't think casual gamers would enjoy this game".....

I don't see how you can claim to be a professional developer if you're making less than 5K USD a year.

No question, but GFK's suggestion was for serious developers, not professional developers. In other words, as I read it, he was referring to their mentality rather than their achievements. ( Which was why I didn't understand all the usual chip-on-shoulder griping about elitism from some others, but that's another story. )

You could probably divide that number by 100 and put off all non-serious developers. I can't see anyone paying $50 just to post to a particular subforum when all the others are free. Equally, I can't imagine why anyone would object to paying the price of a videogame if they really were serious. But maybe I'm wrong on either/both scores.

Like I said before, if you wanted a professional game developers forum, you could pay for GameProducer's Insiders: http://www.gameproducer.net/insiders

but I thought the best thing here would be a free forum where people can post about game production issues and get hopefully useful responses. That's it. Sure there may be some noise (like on Indiegamer which is free) but hopefully less than posting a similar topic in the General forum.

OK, looks like FlameDuck will be talking to himself in his 5K ivory tower...

This thread isn't achieving much any more... just mail BRL with the suggestion and see if they bite. There is quite a bit of support for a free forum.

don't see how you can claim to be a professional developer if you're making less than 5K USD a year. Maybe if you worked in Lithuania or something but there's no way you could reasonably live off that little in Western Europe or the US.

I dont think the $5000 has anything to do with what people earn a year, its the initial shell-out of the readies that will concern some folk :)

The UK is one of the most expensive countrys in the western world, and your average joe, either profesional or not, takes a hit in the pocket every calendar month:-

http://money.scotsman.com/scotsman/articles/articledisplay.jsp?article_id=3628916&section=Mortgages&prependForce=SM_

£2500 ($5000 roughly) is actually not very much money in the UK, but at the same time, its worth its weight in gold (unless your puki of course, but he lives with his mother, apparently)

I live on my own, I have a car and a van (both insured, both fully serviced and fully taxed), I have a mortgage (with insurances), I have Sky TV, I have telephone and broadband services. I'm fully up to date on my council tax and TV lisence. Water rates are paid as soon as the bill comes through the door, gas/electric is paid quarterly, and on time.

I go grocery shopping every week, I use the local milkman and fish man (cos you have to really)... And, I have a girlfriend that likes shoes (which woman doesnt) :)

Note, I havent got kids (well, I have a dog), and a lot of people do, and they are expensive to run (according to my mates)

So after all that, and if we take into consideration that £2500 a year as earnings is unrealistic, lets look at it at £2500 a month....

Which wouldnt leave me very much to play with at all after all the above is taken off. Luckily, I earn a little more than that a month and do have spare money, but I do know that a lot of people dont earn £625 a week net pay, and the average wage in the UK for blokes is (only, but still a decent wage) £564 a week gross!

The figures speak for themselves, professional, or not... $5000 IS a lot of money for people a year, its an extra 208 english quids a month to find! :/

Though, I am up for Blitz Research to do more premium content stuff on the site, dont get me wrong, I am very encouraged at the thought, but it'll have to be reasonably priced, much like, say, the creators club license for XNA or similar.

Cheers

Dabz

wah, that post totally did my head in reading it! [edit] I meant markcw's which has now been deleted.

oops, sorry Grey. Too much coffee and not enough sleep. I thought it was quite readable actually.

Being a hobbyist Id have no need to post in this new Indie/Publishing/Professional forum or whatever it is called but I think it would be good to have such topics/issues in a seperate forum(s).
Id find it interesting to read and Im sure any new members will also be happy to see a single area containing a wealth of information regarding anything they need to know to get a product published from people who have actually been there and done it.

Gets my vote. :)

and the average wage in the UK for blokes is (only, but still a decent wage) £564 a week gross!

Lets put things in perspective here, I get £950 a *month*.

Until last week I was seeing £16 of that to live life. (after food, bills etc..)

I cant wait for next month. I just found out the taxman owes me £125 and a loan I just paid off was miscalculated and they also now owe me £100 :)

Things are looking up Cyg :-) sounds like a game of monopoly "banking error, you get £100".

Lets put things in perspective here, I get £950 a *month*.

I think I worded the parameter list wrong! :)

I meant 'only' when compared to a $5000 (£2500) a month net wage!

Note I said it was still a decent wage, and charging $5000 for a per year subscription would still price anyone out that does indeed get an 'average UK' wage!

Does that still make sense, lol, cos I know what I mean, but obviously, context gets lost when in a forum! ;)

Dabz

Things are looking up Cyg :-) sounds like a game of monopoly "banking error, you get £100".

Uh huh. Could be time to enter that beauty contest.

Even if I'd be a billionaire, I'd simply not pay 5k for a forum category. I'm perfectly able myself to see who the n00bs are. And I'm perfectly able to ignore 'em.

Sorry if this causes offence - anybody who claims they'd pay $5000 for a forum is full of crap.

Anybody who has actually paid $5000 for a forum has had their brain removed.

Anybody who has actually paid $5000 for a forum has had their brain removed.

I wish I thought of that, it might of saved me a little bit of typing! :D

Dabz

lol @ GfK.
Even $1200 a year would be a lot to me, but that i could consider. tough it would take me some time to consider. I meen, thats like $100 a month, that is 3 weeks food for me. Or 1 week gazzz for my car... lol!

1. We already paid to be able to post here.

2. There's not enough indie publishing questions to fill a whole new forum.

I suggest that you open up a channel just for FlameDuck where only he can read and post for $5000. For the others make it free. I would not even pay $1 on such a thing. If it's open i pop in and see if i'm interested, if i can help or get help. If not i look somewhere else...

3. It would be so expensive, almost nobody would be a member

4. People would just end up posting those questions in General Discussion for free

I couldn't agree more that we need something like this. It's not being elitist, it's about seeing things from a different perspective. A prime example was when people were talking about a DX7 renderer for BlitzMax. Most people couldn't care less (and rightly so), so the noise was incredible (why do you need dx7? waste of time etc) but for people wanting to ship games it was very important.

I think it would also encourage people who are writing cool games to contribute more.

And Flameduck, I've got some excellent beachfront property to sell you.

I can add one here: www.d-grafix.com?page=forum (the top 'd-grafix' one)
I can make it separate from all my own stuff. If theres enough demand and make flame, gfk and a few who want to police it 'moderators' until a better home is found or brl set one up. Let me know.

So how about a "Deploying Blitz applications and games" forum?

Where specific hardware / software compatibility and installation rights issues can be discussed.

As for living off the sales of the games I have made, I don't.
Then I'm sorry, but you're not a professional. The definition of professional, is someone who makes a living of it, that is it's their profession.

but I thought the best thing here would be a free forum where people can post about game production issues and get hopefully useful responses.
How is that different from what we have now?

There is quite a bit of support for a free forum.
Oh imagine that. A lot of support for getting something in exchange for nothing. I would never have guessed.

We already paid to be able to post here.
No.

I would not even pay $1 on such a thing.
Well that's not much incentive for BRL to give it to you then.

It would be so expensive, almost nobody would be a member
Yes, that was the point. Make it so expensive that people would not join, unless they where dead serious about becomming members. Also being professionals, they would be paying for it through their business entity, which means they could write off the cost of the forums (be it $5000 or $50), thus effectively letting the taxman pay for it.

People would just end up posting those questions in General Discussion for free
They already do, I thought that was the problem?

I don't think 3 mile island is for sale...

Oh I don't really want it, and I certainly don't have time to police it. But I do think it's a good idea to have a few more "vertical" forums, like for people who use Blitz products professionally, one for those who use them recreationally, and one for those who use it academically and so on.

I havn't bothered to read this thread at all. I'm far too busy actually using Blitz to post about it most of the time.

What I will say, is I was the member of a closed 'elite' community of programmers before - spanning more than just Blitz but including a few people from here.

They failed because elite programmers often dont have enough questions to ask...

The boards died because nobody ever posted a question.

Having a free separate forum with topics related to game publishing IS different and would separate it from General Discussion.

again:

New forumcategories like these:
- business talk
- soundfx/music
? console & hardware talk (monitors, mainboards, cpu, input devices, mp3 players, dig.cameras, wii, x360 etc.)
? forum competitions
? offtopic :-)

are a solution. Note that the more categories there are, the bigger chance there is that some topic in General Discussion stays on the first page for a longer while.

No $, no 1337, just new forum categories .. that can't be that bad, no?

Well that's not much incentive for BRL to give it to you then.

:O) Ahhh Flame...

You enter the admin tool which drives your board software, add a new channel, write a descritption and that's it. Maybe you need $5000 to alter a board this way but believe me there are folks around which do it for less = free.

Maintainance also wouldn't be a problem (if needed at all, on the unity forum we come along pretty well without deleting threads). Either they clean it up on their own or they give permission to someone who is reasonable and active. Works on a lot of other boards like this very well.

I paid $10 or something so I could post in these forums ages ago. And when the maplet account was slow activating I bought Bmax so I could post in the forums. So I'd pay $100 for some forums that were outstanding and necessary for my project.

But I don't think anyone was serious about charging for serious developers and business section, which I think is a very good idea BTW.

-_- so.... do we actualy know what BR is thinking about it really? we can go on like this for days, but that wouldnt really help im afraid. I would say those that want the forum e-mail blitz. Meens his INBOX is full with requests for this new forum. Then we should know soon enough. Anyone got the e-mail?

[edit]
alternativly, we go massive on: http://www.blitzbasic.com/Contact/_index_.php
:-P

I don't think bombarding them with e-mails is going to achieve much (other than p**sing them off).

Also don't think that burying a pretty good idea under a mountain of nonsense like charging $5000 for it, is going to help matters much either.

The idea was only meant as another sub-category of forum, not to impose a class-divide.

I think they should fuse graphics and blitz showcase into one (its always slow in graphics i posted a reply to one weeks ago and its still on page 1) and then use the hole for:

"Professional Development And Release"
Desc.
"A place for developers to discuss publishing, marketing and release strategies for blitz-made products"

<or somthing>

Yeah, spamming them isnt a good idea really. They have probably seen the thread anyway... So we should sit tight and wait, possibly give the thread a bump every now and again just to keep it up there.

Dabz

Thank-you. Your email has been sent to a member of the Blitz Research team, who should get back to you within 48 hours.

Now we wait :-P

who should get back to you within 48 hours

*Dabz chuckles*

Dabz

40 hours to go :P ZzzZzzzZzz

37 hours until this thread dissapear..

They are fast :) as usual. Below a copy of the e-mail:
(i guess it will be up soon)

Hi,

Yes, that's probably a good idea. I'll see what I can do.

Regards,
Simon Harrison,
Blitz Research.

RESULT!

RESULT... A reply! ;)

Oh, yeah... go Simon go! :)

Dabz

I knew simon was the man. Providing Mark/Skid don't have any objections (and why should they?) then it's a goer!

This is the first time I saw this thread... is this still going to happen?

This is a great idea, especially since I'm about to publish a game in the next few weeks. In my experience so far, there's a lot more involved in making a game commercial-ready versus doing freeware.

Was thinking about this again yesterday but I couldn't find the thread.

They added a forum for Blitz3D SDK pretty quickly so it shouldn't be much/any harder to add an Indie section.

I'd like a "business dev" forum. The forum is all about "shooting the shit" and basically if you are not published, you have no business posting there. Its a bit elitist but thats what a lot of guys are asking for...

a bit of "talking shop" helping raise sales etc. Maybe tolerating the odd newbie question on how to sell his latest breakout clone.

c'mon BRL... c'mon. your customers are asking for a business forum :)

. Yup, and yup, I totally agree.
