[edit] I'll tell you why beer is good for programming.

You're less inhibited, so, when you come up with an idea you just get on and do it without trying to second guess yourself and determine whether you should or not. More creative and more work output. Until you fall unconscious, at least.

Then, you wake up the next day and have to spend ages unpicking the total crap you coded the night before. :P

Nestea/Brisk or some 7up variant.

I afford high-caffeine drinks if possible, albeit I will have the odd Pepsi here or there.

Never drank an alcoholic before, never plan too, I like to stay clean 24/7.

Yes, but at least you're doing something other than talking nonsense on forums or fapping away on 'specialist' websites.

Diet drinks.....I can barely stand the after-taste, is it something you just get used too Orca, or those two you mentioned not have said aftertase?

After taste = nutrasweet = cancer... according to some.

PAdd some coffe to a mug, add sugar to taste then pour some cold milk in to it and stir it. Its a really nice, cold milk coffe drink. Perfect for stopping the eyelids from closing.

Chilled water for coding at the office.

Water or Coke for home... though in the summer I prefer a nice, cold Redd's (a local Apple Cider).

Coke, Coke and... well... Coke. Original stuff only. Diet is a four letter word at my desk. :)

The taste of puke is out of my mouth now. Anyone ever crack open a can, take a sip and just can't stop- because it was the best can ever?

Why can one drink taste so different?

Dunno but I know exactly what you mean.

Normally I drink about 6 cans in a night. On a 'good beer day' I can get through the same amount in an hour and a half.

aspartame ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aspartame_controversy ) is what's in diet drinks. Give me natural suger any day please and I'll just work it off with some hyperactivity.

Anyway, cold drinks at my coding desk are water. Or maybe fruit juice (or a smoothie) or fruit juice mixed with sparkling water. Never alchohol and programming. In fact I'm really cutting down on alchohol the last few weeks and I'm a lot clearer and my programming skills are much improved with less tiredness and more concentration. I didn't even drink very much before and I've noticed a difference!

Didn't post in the hot drinks thread, but occasionally have a cup of decaf tea (sometimes with a slice of cake or a biscuit).

Diet Rite. no aspartame. If I could find any drinks sweetened with sugar I'd drink them.

I also drink watered down gatorade while programming.

Yup cold coffee the drink of programmers, well technically its hot when it arrives but you get so engrossed in a programming problem that it goes cold. You get used to it after a while lol

Also, drinking cold coffee tastes better than drinking cold tea. I find that when my coffee has gone cold it still tastes good but Tea tastes awfull when its cold.

I now live in sweden where the idea of 'cider' is fizzy apple (or 'strawbery?!?) squash with alcohol in it, and have never heard of 'W.Gummage', 'jethro' or 'the worzels'.

A quality root beer in a glass bottle. No caffeine though. I stay a hell of a lot more awake and alert now that I've been caffeine free for a couple months. No ups, no downs, just a nice steady flow.

Don't you guys have Splenda or Stevia sweeteners over in the UK?

I make ghetto fizzy drinks by purchasing Tesco High Juice (summer fruits, usually) and mixing with sparkling water. It's about the only fizzy drink that A) doesn't have sweeteners in and B) isn't so full of citric acid that I fear for my teeth.

The stupid advert for it, is that Americans have forgotten what sugar is.
But I think Aspartame is still whats in diet sodas in the states

Mozart always was drunk when he composed music. I think red wine was his favourite. My only problem with that is that I do not like Mozart's music, except for the overture of Figaro's wedding. Poe also usually was either drunk or on Opium when he wrote. I think Hemingway was only drunk between his writing sessions.

I separate work and alcohol, so I usually drink caffeine-free diet coke and two or three strong italian coffees.

Mmmm I drink chilled coffee in Greece, its call Frappa (I think, its pronounced Frap-pay), basically, a couple of spoon fulls of coffee, sugar, milk, and a good few ice-cubes... Whizz it up in a blender and its bloody gorgous!

I drink it at home too in the summer!

Otherwise, good old fashioned squash, and if I need to unwind a little, a few tinnys! :)

no idea, don't touch the stuff but I know that aspartame is in lots of things. Basically I don't buy diet stuff because I watch my weight and exercise and eat more or less heathily so I don't need the diet stuff.

Stevia-based sweeteners are AFAIK not available in the UK. They'd rather try to kill us all off with aspartame than let us use a perfectly safe herbal sweetener. Gee, d'ya think the Aspartame lobby slipped a few brown paper envelopes into MP's pockets? Surely not! :O

Diet rite doesn't taste like a diet soda to me. Maybe I have gotten used to it, but the pure zero cola is a pretty good replacement for the sugary stuff.

And this is coming from a guy who used to live on pepsi and dr. pepper.

Stop talking about Devon. I almost got to live there and still would if I could. Bah... :P
