Hot drinks & programming

Programming requires good hot drinks.

I am craving a hot drink that I don't think I have ever had. It might not even be invented. I want something stronger than tea, but not bitter like coffee. It's probably golden-brown, dark and rich, and not too sweet, either. Kind of like a warmed up porter.

I'm totally serious. I want to expand my beverage horizons.

Try putting salt in strong tea :P

I know exactly what you need. Hot cider. Simply taking cold cider and nuking it in the microwave will do (alternatively, you can boil it). It's a blessing.

More complicated than coffee or "regular" tea to do it well, but it is fantastic, and there are many distinct recipes. If you don't feel like making it from scratch (I don't blame you) there are of course dry mixtures / tea bags available from the usual retailers :)

Water has sufficed for me lately. Dunno why but lately all I've been drinking is water. Something must be wrong with me.

It has been a few years since I've tried it, and I can't remember what it tastes like, but my parents drank this for a few weeks, when they were dieting after christmas '96.

The worst drink I've ever concocted is fizzy lemonade and milk - the taste still haunts me now.

Cider is almost what I was picturing...but a little less sweet and apply...maybe a hazlenut cider, something with a little more woody taste, like how good beer tastes when it is aged in oak barrels. Is there such a thing? Almost like Glogg, but with more of an oak taste.

Worst i ever had was a shot called monkey brains. Its got something to do with baileys, lime juce and grenadine. It curdles, really looks like brains and makes you blow chunks.
Its a good lads(or lasses) night out situation: "you go first..no?.. ok we'll do it together" job.
Then again... no.. it isnt :(

There are lots of different kinds of coffee, some more bitter than others. Maybe you have just been drinking the wrong kind?

Bags of coffee will say on the side that they're dark or light roast. You want the light roast. Try the breakfast blends.

Also, use more sugar, and more milk.

Also there are flavored coffees which also help to cover up any bitter taste.

I reccomend Kopi Lewak.

Either hot cider or lemon tea that's been steeping for half and hour.

And speaking of the worst drinks ever... skittles shaken up in water. Whenever I even think about it, I still almost puke (not joking!).

Well, a nice hot Chai Latte always brings me back.

After all, Chai starts with the letter C, and the sharpness of the heat, and the spice flavors, so Chai Latte is the perfect drink to program in C# by. Little programming humour in there, sorry about that.

Once tried putting milk in a Soda-stream. Ended in tears. Milk doesn't want to be made fizzy.

Those soda-stream thingies were lethal. Mate had one that would explode on a regular basis, if you pressed the button too much. :)

Yikes, guess they need sevicing? Always glad to talk to a fellow experimentalist! I was smart enough to try it round a mates house! We never had one. Whenever we went to a shop that sold them, my bro would keep singing the sodastream theme tune and I would keep tapping the old man on the shoulder saying, "can we have a sodastream?" He would eventually crack and tell us off.

Actually those "Cup-a-soup" things aren't half bad either...

I didn't know you could still get absinthe anywhere. That stuff will screw your brain up pretty bad.

I quite enjoy the aforementioned Soup-at-Hand's, thing is that I need to water it down (with milk) a wee bit into another cup as the taste is too strong otherwise for me to enjoy....

Regarding hot drinks at the PC, only hot drink I can think of that I'd actually drink (aside from the drinkable soups) is a hot chocolate.

That sodastream thing is interesting. I guess they must have those everywhere in the UK? You don't find something like that in every US household.

Well no, I think these are from Knorr. Amongst the many things next to impossible to get in this backwards country, meat pies, honeycomb and Campbell's soup are main contenders.

I don't know, I haven't tried as it's ridiculously expensive. I do have issues drinking something that comes out of an animals backside. I can imiagine that if I did drink coffee, I'd just go for the instant kind.

Try Lapsang Souchong tea - it has a very distinctive smokey flavour, really nice. It's kind of like drinking a cup of tea and eating a bacon sandwich at the same time.

What you need is mulled cider. It makes it less sweet and more flavorful. It's easy to do, too. You put mulling spices in a little container in the pot of cider and heat it on the stove.

You can also add brandy to it.

Try an "afterburner", Vodka & Tabasco.
That will wake you up and give you that cozy warm feeling inside.(A few seconds later it will feel like you got a creature inside your belly trying to chew it's way out).
Finally you will learn how much saliva your mouth can actually produce(quite amazing actually).
I've tried a different "version" some time ago called "Praire Water", 50/50 Tequila & Tabasco.

Also, I've never tried civet cat poop coffee, and I'm sure I never will, but there's all sorts of fun things in the food people eat.

Eggs come out of backsides. Many fruit juices are colored red with crushed bugs. And bleu cheese is so called because it's MOLDY. :-)

Actually, mulling spices make cider less bitter, not less sweet. Many mulling spices have sugar in them. I think they even out the flavor, make the cider more drinkable.


On another note, people always mention cider with alcohol in it, but I've never seen it around here. I wonder if you have to go to a liquor store to get it in NH. They generally only allow sales of wine and beer in supermarkets in NH.

Well, in the fall, I just love some Clam Broth, since I'm a big clambake fan, that just gives me a feeling like no other.

During the summer, I just love that Middle Eastern coffee, there's some sort of different flavor to the way they do things that you don't have in a typical Western cup of joe.

Dont forget cheap light beer, this is actually re-badged urine from those who have drunk the stronger version and removed some of the alcohol for you (Never believe what the brewery tells you about heat extraction, taste buds dont lie :)

Good strong coffee is always good, as is a proper cuppa tea (and I have to agree with Tony Blair here, that nowhere outside of the UK can make a decent cup - cue grrrs).

There's one type of tea that you drink from a metal container with a metal straw that is like 95% caffeine and is really good once you get used to the taste. However, it can be a pain to make and stains your teeth.

I like the idea of vodka and tabasco.

How can you drink clam broth without the monitor being obscured?

In some rough rural W.country pubs they would go quiet and everyone stare if you asked for non alcoholic cider,
..and if you asked for it HOT you'd be thrown out of the pub and chased up the 6 foot wide lanes by wellie-wearing, garden-fork wielding locals shouting "OIE BEE AAAFTER EE!" :)
