That is simply amazing. I can't believe the range of emotional subtlety on display there - it may be cosmetic but this'll really add to the immersion in an online game! Imagine where this kind of tech could go if it could be generated in context of a player's actions, or if one day it could lip synch live to a player's voice. Imagine if a webcam could allow the character's face to match the player's facial expression... And the actual mouth motion to the speech - flawless. As good as any pixar feature film. Can you tell I'm excited?

lol, that game is one big comic

'eh, I'm still waiting for an online game that gets local speech correctly.
(re: what you speak can only be heard by nearby guys, volume based upon their distance and your vocal strength)

Anyhow, it'll be damn cool having your avatar laugh and have a full-fledged facial setup flow with it (especially in a stylized game such as this), rather than a boring static face.......

Episode2's going to be a no-brainer at this rate if they're still keeping the episode-style price-tag for the whole deal.

That's it, I'm upgrading.

Amazing.
This is on par with what Pixar does in a month :P
(Okay, not a month, but a longish time period).

Too bad the animations are still obviously 95% posed for the scene (of course), but it does look pretty good.
The detail of his ammo belt moving when he sat down got my attention. I wonder if that was part of the pre-determined animation, or if it is an in-game physics thing?

I'm just still astounded by the fact this will be all doable ingame without the need of super-high-poly faces to make everything bend & move smoothly...., I mean, sure, the guys in Half-Life2 looked great, but their facial movements were nowhere near as expressive or exaggerated as Heavy Weapons Guy there....

There's also something about that nose-sniffle I find special.....
('course it has nothing to do with the actual game since that's just a little example displaying the new engine they wrote)

[EDIT] Looks even better in the HD rendition of the trailer.

The source Engine (in its constantly evolving state) is quite an impressive technology.

If only my damned steam account wasn't lost.

That's nice, the game looks to have the kind of humor I don't think I've seen since NOLF 1/2.

That's just the trailer, its all pre-animated.... Look for the gameplay 2 clip, its all in game, and it sill looks very good!

I used to play Team Fortress Classic back in the day, it got me hooked on online FPS games! I have a feeling this one will have quite a following.

I love HL, HL2, DoD, etc etc and I played the orginal Quake Team Fortress and TFC. So, I am definitely buying this. And I'm definitely buying Shadowrun also.

I like the art direction on this.. I would like to see more games like this instead of the silly (in my mind) realism that everybody strives for.

Ufo afterlight has a "similar" style, and it was panned because it had lost the realism style of the first two.
And apocolypse was panned because it went for a more "style" based look.

I like the new TF2 look, but some ppl will moan at the loss of "realism"

I think this is a bad design direction. What's the point of rendering pre-made animations in real time? It's going to take a ton of money to produce those animations, and in the end they are just going to be very expensive cut scenes.

I'd be more impressed if they had network players that lip-synced to the player's mic, or characters that actually walked using physics, instead of just sliding along the ground.

Honestly, I think this kind of stuff is just something Valve can spend money on to try to convince the customer that they are doing something new and better. NVidia and ATI have to constantly convince their customers they are doing something newer and better that is worth the price of a new graphics card, and this is all they can come up with.

It depends on how they do it, really. For the light-hearted cartoony feel, it seems a great idea so that stuff moves in a fun, funny and dynamic way. Multiplayer shooting games lose a lot of life when the only animations are the ones you need, where a character standing somewhere shooting a gun like a hooligan is just a guy standing still, moving his wooden arms about like a scarecrow with a little muzzle flash coming out of his gun.

The easiest way to combat that is more animations; things for characters to do besides just communicating "Standing, shooting, aiming downwards and turned towards door."

However, if these are like gestures selected from menus, it will not be remotely fun. To be a good idea, this has to be 100% automatic based on existing conditions. (The player who would be choosing won't care; he doesn't see what an ass the system is making of him).

As for precision physics-based animations with targets calculated on the fly... Yah, that would be marvellous.
