Sometimes, i mean sometimes, it's just fu$%ing fun making a game! :O)
...ahhh
Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/...ahhh It's also really frustrating. I've given up trying to write games.
What problems are you having, SonicFactory?
What game are you trying to make? I posted in the beginners area of blitzmax and a day later I had example code posted by TonyG on how a specific game feature works.
So, you may need to just start spamming the forums with help requests. Don't be disheartened.

It's like any other good relationship, it involves love and hate... :O)
I'm great at starting games. It's always a pleasure and progress is rapid. Finishing them is nigh on impossible, and not very enjoyable (until you finally do finish, I imagine)
Well, making games is work just like other things. The more if it comes to the end...
I have fun making a game until it comes the time to make an editor.....it's just so freaking boring to make a GUI (even a stupidly simple one that's static), never got around to finishing one of the bazillion map editors I've started...
Well, hopefully it will be more fun when I get through college and be able to do all my art-work traditionally so I can have some decent/high-quality pieces to work with rather than simple place-holders.

Art knackers me up, I have about a dozen projects, past and present that is sitting on my HD, placeholders are okay, but its getting a hold of an artist and tweeking out how much they charge thats the hardest part.
I emailed one, he told me to email him in March, I emailed him in march, he told me to email him at the backend of April, I emailed at the end of april, I got a 'undelivered email report'
So I give up!
Artist's, they are like bloody builders! *cough*
Never mind, I'm up and running on another project, not much media required, phew!

Yeah I had good fun today, planning for an hour or so and then implementing it all and getting good results.
Got a huge load of art through today, it looks great.

I'm in the last stages of adding key mapping to my game and it's like pushing a rock uphill to muster the enthusiasm to continue (particularly with Stalker sitting on my hard drive).
But see my sig.

Boy do I know this feeling! I've been on my World Designer for seemingly ages (ok, since about November 2006). Its getting more complex, but also more robust. Some things pop up that you didn't plan out right in the beginning and result in setbacks such as recoding and restructure. I guess you live and learn.
Anyway, this entire project, basically a map editor, came about from building a game and I thinking, "Hmmm... Let me just build a simple map editor to handle map creation so I no longer have to do it the extremely hard way!" yeah. ok. Anyway, its nearing a point it can actually be used for what I originally intended it for. It has a *lot* of extra stuff I wasn't originally intending it having. I made some great progress today tho. I worked out a few bugs that bothered me for some time now, and added a few features it was in need of having. I actually took a look at my original design and took a laugh. Maybe soon I'll start the game again, this time re-coring the engine to match the map file. Once its up and going for a bit, I'll find some stuff I'll need to add. :P
Even tho it seems at times a battle, I enjoy it too much not to do it.

Poor performance (ie low framerates) tend to kill my efforts. My designs are too ambitious for someone with only average programming and math skills. I can make everything work, just not fast enough. Ah well...

The other thing is that you reach a point where canning a project would mean throwing away months (years?) of work for naught. Perhaps that's a reason why many leave a string of unfinished projects behind them - if you get too far, then not finishing means you lose too much...

I agree with that. I've been designing this game for quite a while now. I haven't abandoned it at all. I needed some tools (which seems most game developers do as some point) to make the job easier. I think with this world designer, I'll have a great path to proceed forward. I made it using OOD, so its quite manageable now. Adding features would be cake by comparison of its predecessor (Run Away World Designer).
Honestly, I've tossed away months/years work and quite frankly I set out to complete this game. I've had goes at various genres, and even tried my hand with 3D only to be somehow side-tracked with another project. Well, let me tell you this... I'm gonna finish this one! It may lead to more interesting games to come.
Feel free to take a peek at my work so far. I am a bit behind my intentions (hahaha - aren't we all?) at releasing the Windows version. Mac is quite stable tho, and Windows really isn't far behind it. Linux I worry about. It has some issues that I'll get worked out soon enough I'm sure :)

Good for you!
(I'll check out your site tonight.)

The site is in progress too. I added a forum to it recently and wanted it as a way people could give me feedback on the projects I've done. The main page doesn't link to it yet, but soon enough it'll be there. I might just do that tonight as well :)
EDIT: I went ahead and updated the site to show 2D World Designer up top. The rest follows. There is now a link on my main page to the forum should anyone be interested.

Grey, where do you get your artwork from?
Is it a friend, someone you bumped into, or other?
And could you possibly just email me a ball park figure of how much they charge? Say, for your Easter Bonus game.
I'm keen to know this sort of stuff, as this is the road block for me.

Dabz: Checkout this topic, it explains what I did:
http://greyaliengames.com/blog/how-i-sourced-the-art-and-music-for-my-games/
Also for my current game, because I'm hired by BFG, they found the artist and probably are paying him a lot.
