Quick email question for Orange users

Is anyone else here having trouble sending emails via OE or FF who use Orange?

I can send emails fine from their site but keep getting an error message when trying to send from my email package.

"An error occured sending email. The mail server sent an incorrect greeting. Cannot connect to SMTP server."

I have not changed any settings at all, it used to work fine. What settings are you guys using for your pop and smtp settings?

Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn`t. I assume it`s a problem with them that`s why I wanted to see if anyone else is getting a similar error. Even when it does work the message takes an age to send, 30secs+

All working fine here.

SMTP port is the one Orange insist you use for sending mail as they block port 25 for anywhere except them - smtp.orangehome.co.uk.

Could also be an anti-virus program gone bad...

Many antivirus programs essentially run a proxy on your machine, placing themselves in the middle between your mail client and the ISP's mailserver, doing their thing. In my experience especially Norton Antivirus is prone to flaking out and causing problems like this.

My email seems to work ok, but it takes ages to log onto the POP3 server to retrieve emails now, for some reason. It used to be instantaneous. :/

Thats happening to me too. I`ll try the AntiVirus thing. Incidently I can send emails fine from their website just not from FF or OE. I have checked that the settings are all the same and they have not changed.

Is there somewhere on the Orange site that you can retrieve your settings from? I cannot find it but they must be able to provide your details if you need to double check them surely.

Can anyone point me in the right direction? I have trouble finding anything on the Orange site.

Everything is fine again now, not sure why though as I haven`t done anything? Still, it works and thats the main thing.

Could very well be your ISP's mailserver flaking out...
