I've just found this item in my girlfriend's laptop's startup list, and googling it says it's the Gaobot.ee Worm. But all the links from the site saying 'fix this' point to RegCure. I bought RegCure the other day on my other machine only to then find out (from some of the forum members here) that RegCure itself is dodgy and/or a con. Another website tells me that the item is simply a Toshiba component and fairly essential for running. What the hey?

Yep its a component on Toshiba laptops - I know because I have one! If you've been conned, then you're entitled to a refund so don't just let it go - that's how these crooks continue to do what they're doing.

Cool - that's good to hear. Thanks. As for the refund, I agree but as they're in a different country and I have no technical way of proving that the software is useless and as it was not too much money, I have to just cut my losses and not waste any more precious time. I know that's exactly how these people keep on doing what they're doing, but I have bigger fish to fry...

Moral of the story is to search on reputable websites only ;)

Most of the top AV software providers wesbsites are good for the purpose.
