Gish sales stats

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Gish sales stats

These have just appeared.

Interesting reading, thanks. I'm surprised it did so badly on sites like GarageGames, Manifesto and TotalGaming, all of which have a strong non-casual audience. Granted it wasn't casual enough for Reflexive, but I would have expected stronger sales through the other three. Also surprising that it wasn't a bigger hit at retail, although they hint that this may have been an internal matter.

Good reading.

I loved the idea, but found the actual gameplay to be laggy, slow, and boring.. I didn't buy it after playing the demo.. Perhaps others did the same.

I didn't buy it either. It still made $121,000.

So essentially 100k in 2 years, now, I'm not knowledgable in the indy-market thing, but is that a good or bad thing, as it doesn't quite look too dandy from my point of view if you split that among 3 developers who spent 6 months of their life on it....

Three years, no? I thought it was released in May, 2004. I suppose 40k isn't bad for six months work, but can you keep churning out games of that quality every six months, and get enough luck and everything else that needs to go your way to keep selling at that level? It's got to get real tiring.

I just counted the first @ 100k income for a nice number to work with.
(and guesstimated last year and current year brought in 20k)

But going with my 100k number for 2 years, that's 16k per each of the three developers each year for about 2-3 years depending on title popularity, and if you can continue produce decent titles that'll actually sell for x amount of years.....

It just doesn't really look like all that much money in my eyes here for a full time position.....
(unless my math is horribly out of place here)

Well your math is only accurate if they didn't do any more work for the next two and a half years. Yes, they were only ( on average ) earning that in the first place, but once you're started you're earning the second year's income from your first game, and the first year's income from your second game.. and so on and so forth in subsequent years.

But as I say, that's assuming all your games are as successful as Gish. And not many people are consistently churning out games which are that successful.

Considering that the median household income in this county is $46,000 it isn't a lot of money. Average sallaries for game developers across the board were in the $60k - $70k sallary bracket.

$60k-70k totaly out of scope here m8t in the Uk its anywhere from 18k-150k mainly down to the company history and your own dev skills

Thanks GfK. Intersting read. I posted my views here:

Hmm...very uninspiring and boring overall. The concept has potential but the execution of it is just horrible.

I wanted to like Gish too when I first tried it. Was a cool idea, but I got bored of it very quickly and didn't even finish the demo.

Wonder what kind of conversion rates they got, will have to go back and see if it was mentioned in the article. not mentioned

BTW I was just on the GG community site and saw some extra stats were posted there by one of the Gish devs.

Here is all the information I have about the OSX and Linux sales. All I can track is what OS Gish was activated on.

Total activation keys: 4703
(notice this is more then the number of sales because this includes free versions, test copies, personal copies, review copies, etc.)

Windows Activations: 3635
Linux Activations: 333
OSX Activations: 997
Orders activated more then once: 2024
Orders not activated: 199
Multi OS activations: 461

As you can see 461 people ran Gish on more then one OS.

Here are the percentages, I think these are probably pretty accurate in terms of sales per OS:
73% Windows
20% OSX
7% Linux

great stats thanks. The OSX stats are interesting and the Linux aren't bad but that may be down to the game audience who are more likely to install Linux...

Ye, its good info. thanks for sharing!!

Btw, here's some additional information about the sales:

Includes additional information about conversion rate, retail sales that weren't covered before.
