They have new optimised C2D processors coming soon - apparently leaner, faster and more power efficient. There was a small article in PC Zone magazine this month about them.

This is utter stink - Intel are up to something here.

This must be some kind of move to kill off AMD for good - I heard they are in financial trouble and trying to raise funds.

I just found info - the new line is code-name 'Penryn' and it is a 45nm successor.

Couple of weeks ago AMD announced that they were slicing about 50% off of their prices to make way for new quad core CPU's later in the year.

I don't think AMD are doing all that badly :) they bought ATI a few months ago, and will be releasing the new R600 soon.

AMD has sliced their prices simply because they can't compete with the top end - here in NZ, their most expensive processor is $377, which is competitively priced to the 6600, but they've got nothing past that.

For faster dual core or quad core, AMD has nothing now, and it had better get going quickly with Barcelona. While $1000+ is probably not that popular, a fair amount of people want to spend > $377 (I know I did).
