I wouldn't buy the Asus when you can get the BFG model already overclocked ( 710mhz core instead of 675 ) for around the same money. To be fair to Asus, OverClockers do overcharge a bit, so you may actually be able to get that Asus a bit cheaper.
I read two review sites (only in passing) and didn't even know the 8600 Ultra existed. I've got the 8800 GTS 320mb which seems to still be the king of price/performance. The 8600 Ultra might outperform it at 1920 with heavy AA though. Haven't put it through its paces with CUDA yet though...
I want a 8600GT due to the lower power consumpten and as i've read in the reviews it's doing okayish in most modern games. Problem is that there is no Mac with such a card around...*sigh*
I'd probably get a eVGA e-GeForce 8800 GTS 320 MB KO with ACS³ which can be gotten for $300 and has clock speeds of

Is 320mb on these 8800 models ok for running games at 1680x1050?
Probably - certainly 1600 x 1200 seems to be no problem.

It might be better to wait for the R600. What benchmarks there are puts it at 10% - 48% faster than the 8800GTX, only problem is that the early versions tested used up to 230w!!! hope they get the power consumption down lol
I'm taking the plunge on the basis that I can SLI the 8800 GTX's. In fact, my Striker Extreme motherboard can utilise three 8800 GTX cards. Won't matter to me if the R600 packs more of a punch - it won't pack more punch than two 8800 GTX's in SLI.
