Windows Update Problem

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Windows Update Problem

There are several windows updates that I want to download, critical ones, but I do not want to download IE7 for various reasons. The problem is however that there seems to be no way to not download IE7 as it doesn`t give you the option to disable it from the list. And it is also in the critical list. Grrr....

Can anyone help?

Jason.

After a bit of googling I found this,

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=4516A6F7-5D44-482B-9DBD-869B4A90159C&displaylang=en

Has anyone tried it and is it just a case of running the program? A black box with some commands flash up but it is gone before you can read it. Is that all I need to do to block IE7? or do I need to place the program somewhere? I assume some registry values are being changed? I cannot find any helpful docs.

Jason.

Can you at least see the KB numbers for each of the other updates you need? You can download them all manually.

There's a registry key you can set to prevent the install of IE 7.0:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\7.0]
"DoNotAllowIE70"="1"

Save this as a .reg file, double-click, and you're done. If you want to undo this setting, either change the '1' to a '0' and re-run, or delete the key from the registry.

I've successfully used this myself.

While not much help for you now - the first time WindowsXP tried to download IE7 I said 'no' and it hasn't tried to come back since....strange that other people have different experiences?

It realized you were totally serious based on how long you took to click it. Long enough to read it, not long enough to have been 'thinking' about getting it... hehe
