I'm confused - what are the differences between v2 and v3 of .NET framework?

And is v3 automatically installed with Vista?

Ps. Did you notice my use of the spanish for "Net", that is WEB. I know a net just as much implies that you have been "Captured", but WEB just sounds more evil.

Are you sure that v3 is automatically intalled with XP updates?

I have several PCs connected to the net with automatic updates, and on none of them has .net Framework 3 been downloaded.

I'm fairly sure 1.1 was automatically installed at one point... but not 2.0 or 3.0

Well it was auto downloaded (And I awlays say yes), so maybe it asked me.

Can any other Vista / XP users can confirm whether they've had any version of .net framework automatically installed through windows updates?

Kinda sorta. The tools for it have not been very well integrated into Visual Studio yet. Not all of it works with anything less then XP either (at least not the winfx stuff that I was interested in).

Same here - which is why I'm wondering if I should or need to move to 3.0

It seems like 2.0 and 3.0 are very similar, but 3.0 adds some stuff on top, like WinFX, WPF etc., however I need to do some reading up on what these actually are.

And I thought programming was getting easier :(

.NET 3.0 --is-- 2.0 plus WinFX and WPF. The new Vista frameworks are the whole difference.

The .NET 3.0 framework comes as an optional update, though, and therefore is not installed automagically.

If you're interested in the .NET 3.0 Framework SDK, which is now called "Windows SDK", prepare yourself for a 1 GB download. And no, that does NOT include one of those Express Edition IDEs. The baby just got really big.

It still looks as if Microsoft did not properly prepare itself for the Vista rollout. Neither Robotics Studio nor XNA nor the Visual Studio Express Editions without the new patch work on Vista, and the .NET 3.0 stuff just was not designed for XP and developers who do not want to write specifically for Vista just have no use for .NET 3.0 or its SDK. Taking full advantage of .NET 3.0 means buying a one-way ticket to Vista.

I'm a gonna stick with 2.0 for now. The company I work is still doing stuff from the old ASP days and only recently in the last year started doing 2.0 stuff. However, would definately like to get a jumpstart on 3.0 if it does seems the way things are gonna be moving in the near future....

I'm an MS junkie and I don't see it as likely in the short term. One year at the earliest and two is more like it. Since anything using 3.0 requires XP or higher and many companies still use 2K.

.NET 3.0 is installed by default with Vista, although you can switch it off, unlike any of the other things like IE7 or WMP11 that come installed by default with Vista.


Last I checked, .NET 3.0 was only a Recommended update for XP, so if what you say holds true than they either elevated it or changed Automatic Updates to now accept Recommended stuff as well. I'm surpised either way.


Probably not. It's really only useful for Vista specific development from what I can tell. Plus on XP, it installs .NET 2.0 as a pre-requisite and the actual .NET 3.0 stuff is tiny in comparison.


I'd say the situation can be compared to that of DX10. It won't be wise to code for it exclusively for a good 3 years or so, by which time a newer version will be out anyway.

Its a never ending cycle.......
