'Ancient Wars: Sparta' looks interesting

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/'Ancient Wars: Sparta' looks interesting

Due out in 12 days.

To me this looks like Age of Empires 3 with an ancient setting. I wonder if Microsoft and Ensemble now have a bit of direct competition.

Apparantly, a demo is due soon.

Oh yay! Another boring formulaic repetitive RTS game! And we only just got Tiberium Wars too! It's a veritable smörgåsbord of mediocrity!

After seeing 300, I'll buy anything related to Sparta :P

Blitz word of the day: smörgåsbord

:)

Same. FOR SPARTA!

I love these games. AOE 3 was good but the lack of ancient civs and fighting era's ie medeival , was a let down.

Rise & Fall is another cool game.

I'll definately be buying this.

Quiz of the day: What does "smörgåsbord" mean?
Hint: It got something to do with cheese.

I think that "smörgåsbord" also exsists in english, I just cant spell it.

And yes RTS games are the best. I love C&C3

deps.. it just means feast/party type thing.

/me mutters under his breath about morons and having better things to do than point out that just cause Mikkel used a non english word, it doesn't instantly mean dick cheese.

[edit]Don't worry moderators... I have NO intentions of saying anything further... it was just a little toooo hard to resist [/edit]

And you think they aren't counting on that?

Well there's a contradiction in terms. C&C3 is not an RTS. Codename Panzers is an RTS. Dawn of War is an RTS. Company of Heroes is an RTS. Starcraft is an RTS. C&C3 is a complex shoot-em-up.

just cause Mikkel used a non english word
Hey! It's in Mirriam-Webster! I don't think I should be blamed for the English not bothering to come up with their own words, and instead just reuse the Swedish (or French if you prefer the word buffet) words.

My old friend, I wouldn't dream of blaming you for anything :). I was taking a rather sarcastic poke at those who instantly assume a foreign word has some meaning involving cheese LOL. Damn, and I have already broken my word to the moderators, at least I am trying to be, erm,nah... :P

Company of Heroes was fantastic, even on my ageing machine it looked great and played better than any other recent RTS I can think of.

Give me starcraft any day.

Wonder if the game acknowledges that Spartan society was based on slavery.

Apparently a rite of passage for young spartan men was that as a band they would roam the countryside and if they found a Helot (slave) who couldn't give a good reason for being where they were, they were to be summarily executed.

well the demo just came out for anyone thats interested.

Which makes it pretty much just like every other society at the time.

Ahh yes...I recall back when I had to do that...such a pitty...

@Dynaman - yep.

All the same, seen the film maself and :- FOR SPARTA! (;-0)

Most people would have a good reason "I'm a farmer, this is the field I work in." Is a good reason. The more modern kinds of slavery were FAR moe barbaric.

Leaving 'modern' slavery practices aside, I think the Spartans were tougher on their slaves than other greek societies.

Demo crashes for me on Vista.

thats ok, vista's in beta for another 11 months or so, as long as it works in XP. (;-)

Smörgås = sandwich. bord = table. You can have cheese on sandwiches. So it did have something to do with cheese! ;)

I'm going to see 300 next week. Probably not going to play the demo or the game since I don't play much RTS games.

How was 300 by the way? I haven't seen it yet. Was it better than the Matrix? (graphic-wise, of course, I have yet to find a better storyline than the Matrix)

as long as there's no flying spartans...

300 was good for a light hearted gore fest, with a storyline that lent tangibility to the myth that is SPARTA, fantastic piece of escapism. Not comparable to matrix however, different genre.
