Resident Evil 4 is like Game "Crack"

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Resident Evil 4 is like Game "Crack"

I avoided buying it for ages because I knew I'd get hopelessly addicted - same reason I've avoided Oblivion and WoW.

Well a friend lent it to me for my game cube and now I'm an addict. Been playing it late at night the last week (won't play in the day as I at least have that much discipline plus I have kids who shouldn't watch it).

Last night was the worst, 5am I went to bed! At 1am I thought, I'll go to bed soon, then it was 2am, and I thought, I just clean out this area, then it was 3am and I thought well I'm gonna feel like crap tomorrow and be in deep trouble with the missus anyway so I'll carry on, at 4am I found the shooting gallery subgame...

It's a really good game, the best resident evil game ever, and one of the gest games ever. Easily 10/10 material. So addictive, the exploring, the killing, the weapons upgrade, the finding money and treasures, the cut scenes and big monsters etc. It's just brilliant.

It's one of the best games ever made, no question. The first Resident Evil that I didn't fancy playing, and it turned out to be far better than I could possibly have imagined. Proof positive that the Japanese still make the best games.

lol - yep, RE games are class. I've loved playing them - excpet for RE2 on the PSone, for some reason. Just didn't get into it.

Haven't played RE4 yet, and my GameCube is long gone. :(

Just a note - Don't buy the PC port of it, it's horrendous compared to the GameCube/PS2 version.

Great game, albeit a bit difficult on the first run until you figure things out regarding which weapons you should hold onto and upgrade, beaten it already on the GameCube a year or some ago, didn't really get into the extras for some reason, as I just went back into the main-game again to begin collecting cash for the infinite-ammo weapons.

Capcom also recently announced they're doing another port-job of it to the Wii, and I get the feeling that's going to be a horrid mess if they don't add craploads of new content to make it worthwhile over the existing (cheaper) versions.
(more-so if they can't get all the graphical effects in, as to which they chopped out in the ugly PC port)

Yeah I played the original RE on Playstation flipping ages ago and it was cool but a bit frustrating. Then later on I played RE Veronica X on PS2 and that was really good. Then a couple of years on I got RE2/3 and 0 and the remake of the original on Cube and loved every minute of them. Zero was innovated with the two player bits. But 4 just kicks ass, I love it. I can't stop thinking about it. My sleep last night was some kinda crazy overtired thing where I was smashing crates and upgrading weapons, etc

Damn, I really wanna play RE4, now! :)

Code: Veronica on the DreamCast was a good 'un, too. However, my main memory of playing all RE games so far is still the sound of Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata echoing down the hall, in RE1 on the old PSX. Class. :)

Dogs, spiders, windows, shotgun, collapsing ceiling, acid grenades, rocket launcher, f*cking ink ribbons, crap player movement - it's a classic.

5am I went to bed!

Sounds like my EverQuest days hehe. But...these RE games are scary man. When I bought my gamecube oh so many years ago I bought 3 games along with it. One of them was RE. I played it once. Absolutely could not continue as it had me freaked out. Haven't played it to this day. Hmm...maybe I'll go fish around for it...

Absolutely could not continue as it had me freaked out.
o_O T'is a bit scary but I didn't imagine it'd affect anyone that badly. :)

Same, which is odd since I found RE4 kinda mellow compared to other games, for example, like STALKER.

It wasn't RE4. It was the RE that came out for the gamecube launch.

I wasn't refering to RE4 specifically - I haven't even played it. I mean ANY RE. :)

Wait...if you haven't played any RE...how do you know it's scary.... =p

yeah it kinda read like that.

I didn't play it last night, I was just too knackered. I'd love to play it right now but it'd probably give the kids nightmares ;-)

I actually did have a dream that I was running around with that chainsaw in a dirty forest, chasing peasants around. I
later woke up thinking "Did RE influence me that much, or am I just that twisted?"

Is it still called a nightmare if you are the monster in your dream? lol

Proof positive that the Japanese still make the best games.
Maybe they just care more?

Another 4am bender. In trouble today... /hide

Yes, Resident Evil 4 is a total classic, thanks to its ingenious mix of both 1st and 3rd person shooter elements.

Not only that, but it's longer than all the old Resident Evil games put together. Over 20 hours of gameplay compared to the 2~3 hours it would take me to complete all the other games individually, and not a single Zombie in a sight, it's almost a new game in its own rights.

There are so many AWESOME bits in the game that you want to reserve a save point just before each of them, to show your friends. I agree, you can't stop playing this game once you start because it's so addictive. I love that siege bit in the house Grey Alien :)

You can also get this game for the PS2 I have both versions (a good excuse to play through again), the graphics are ever so slightly worse than the Gamecube version but the game is the same, and you also get an extra 7 hours of gameplay subgame with Ada on the PS2 version, not to mention the PS2's superior joypad.

Yep, certainly one of the best games ever made right now, definitely the most inspirational game of this decade, like Final Fantasy VII/Metal Gear Solid were in the previous decade. It makes you wonder why they haven't been able to make a game like this sooner. Flawless! I'd recommend this game to everyone.

Maybe they just care more?

Maybe they do. They do seem to have a real love for games in Japan. It also seems that the Japanese game culture is more about the enjoyment of the experience than a perceived challenge, and perhaps that is why their games are more inventive and more immersive than Western games.

ENAY: Yeah the siege in the house was fantastic, blocking the windows, then later on being forced to retreat upstairs and them scaling ladders to get in etc. I know what you mean about wanting to keep each save game to show people or just play it again. Interested to hear that the PS2 has more stuff in it. I got the GameCube version as the Gamecube tends to load quicker and also save games quicker plus has smoother graphics. I'm reaching the end of the castle area but suspect there may be a bit more game to go yet.

Gah - I might have to get another cube, just to play this. It sounds great.

Anyone tried it on the Wii?

Hmm. Is the Wii fully backwards compatible with the GC?

Yes it is. You just pop the disc in like normal, which I think is a great little feature.

Anyone tried it on the Wii?

Its the only reason why I even still play the Wii.
Is the Wii fully backwards compatible with the GC?

Yep.

And for anyone else who hasn't played Resident Evil 4, yes it is THAT good. I'm even though I've already played through the GC version several times on the Wii, I'm still looking forward to the new Wii'd port version of it comming out soon.

Cool - maybe I'll wait until I can afford a Wii, then. :)

There's gonna be a Wii version? I'll wait for that then. :o>

> and perhaps that is why their games are more inventive and more immersive than Western games.

Or it just seems that way, how many big head kid adventure games must they crank out before we accuse them of being boring and repetative too?

There's gonna be a Wii version? I'll wait for that then. :o>

Yessir. Its basically the same game, except will full screen 480p and the GameCube enhanced graphics (note that the GC had superior graphics than the PS2 version). It will also contain all the bonus stuff the the PS2 had. The controls will be "Wii'd up" though which I think may actually be a good thing cause now you can use to the wii mote to aim rather than struggling to aim while the frickin chainsaw guy comes running at you...

Not to mention RE Umbrella Chronicles is also around the corner....good stuff...good stuff....

Or it just seems that way, how many big head kid adventure games must they crank out before we accuse them of being boring and repetative too?

Of course they have a ton of weird, boring clones as well. I was comparing ( or trying to, anyway ) like for like, the best, most original Western games with the best, most original Japanese games. Having said that, I'd still argue that a fairly derivative middle of the road, played it 100 times before big-head Japanese adventure ( FF9? ) would give me a lot more entertainment than a fairly derivative middle of the road, played it 100 times before Western shooter ( Doom 3? )

At the top end, with the Resident Evil 4's, the Final Fantasy VII's, the Metal Gear Solid 1's, or one of those Zelda games I don't enjoy but most people seem to, I can't think of anything from the West which compares.

Well, new number one to do for my extended easter hols is to scour the shops for a version of this for my GC (better graphics), but then the PS2 has more content ?? might have to try and get both platforms versions - or is that just pure greed ? Seems like a good alternative to the House of the dead, me and the wife were playing a version of house of the dead IV recently (arcade) - nice gorefest.

Theres gonna be a Wii version? Well if its in time for christmas then the Wii just might make my kids christmas list (;-)

The extra content can only be accessed after completing the actual main game. Both GC and PS2 version have extra content after completing the game, but the PS2 also has extra mini games :
- Separate Ways
- Ada's Report
- New costume set (1920s outfit, and armor suit)
- P.R.L. 412 (Plaga Removal Laser Gun - most people think this gun is a bit out of place in a game like this anyways
- Cutscene Movie Browser - this was due to the fact that the PS2 version's cut scenes were actually recorded video clips of the GC's realtime cutscenes
- PS2 also had full widescreen support.

Good news is all of this plus the GCs enhanced graphics is comming to the Wii version. Whoohooo...!

Theres gonna be a Wii version? Well if its in time for christmas then the Wii just might make my kids christmas list (;-)
You're gonna buy your kids Resident Evil?!?

Yeah the GC doesn't have widescreen support which is a shame but I put my tv in Wide 4:3 mode and it was fine.

Those chainsaw guys, and later on women, are pretty tough, one hit and you are dead which is pretty realistic I guess :-)

I'll give it a go on the wii, hopefully it'll be playable.

I couldn't get past the first part of the game when I rented it on the ps2. I died, about 10 times in the same mod of ... things... and had to spend about 10 min to get back to that spot each time, cause there was no save placed before it, which would have been good design.

So, yeah... I stopped playing after that and sent it back to gamefly. I can't abide terrible design. The controls were clunky, the aiming was both slow and lacked fine control, and with the unobviousness of that area + the fact that I couldn't load up right outside it. I passed on it.

It might be a step in the right direction. But it was still terrible. I honestly can't see what people enjoy about it. It is you against the controls, rather than you against -enemies-.

Say wha? Maybe the DualShock controller wasn't as well implemented for the game as the GC controller was? I dunno.
But one of the big draws for me to this game was how easy it was to control compared to the average console game.

The only time the controls disappointed me was when I wanted to strafe. There is no strafing.

Damnit Leon, how hard is it to walk sideways!?

@Flame, they can have a Wii, RE4 will be kept locked away....

What games are you playing? Maybe it was easier than any consol FPS, but I don't enjoy them either. I mean... Compare the controls to something like... Ratchet and Clank.

Or if you need an adventure game comparison. How about Sphinx and the cursed mummy.

Like I said before. The controls were better than any other Survival Horror... But they ALL suck so bad that isn't very hard.

SH is a combo of 3rd person shooter and adventure... So if you look at almost any of those on the PS2 or Gamecube.. and RE4 is trash.

My favourite is Resident Evil 2. Maybe because it's the first one I played... Anyway, I played through most of the games, 1, 2, 3, 4, code veronica, outbreak, and the light gun games.

I like the siege bit on the house in Resi 4 and the mercenaries sub game. Resi 3 had a mini game too which I quite liked, having a timer to run across the city saving people.

Yeah it could have done with a Strafe control. The GC controls aren't too bad, you can get quite good with them. Of course they are not as precise as a PC mouse but it doesn't matter too much in the scheme of the whole game.

DampeS8N: When you die it says "Continue?" and you can carry on from the last door you came through, this is way better than the other RE games where you DID have to go back to the last save which could have been miles away, through really slow opening doors etc.

But it was still terrible. I honestly can't see what people enjoy about it. It is you against the controls, rather than you against -enemies-.

It was probably a combination of many things. RE4 itself is a tough game and the controls for it is a bit unusual when I first started playing it. My first reaction was that this game would of faired better if the controls were more like an FPS controls, where you can strafe and stuff(ala Gears of War). And I did have a hard time adjusting to it at first, but once you really get into it, it all starts to make sense of why the controls are the way they are. The aiming and stuff comes with time for any console shooter, but the fact that you have to press multiple buttons in order to attack is definately unfamilar to all to us. But it works and by halfway through the game it becomes second nature.

The only gripes I had about this game is the inability to switch weapons without having to go into you inventory and select it. And the fact that you learn about the plot of the game by finding other peoples diary notes seemed too convient. Other than that, this is definatley one of the best game I've ever played. And will probably be the best game on the Wii so far...

DampeS8N: When you die it says "Continue?" and you can carry on from the last door you came through, this is way better than the other RE games where you DID have to go back to the last save which could have been miles away, through really slow opening doors etc.

I don't remember. If it gave me that option, I'm sure I took it. However. The last door I believe I had gone through, was the save one... Unless you count a path as a door.

Look. I'm sure the game 'got better'. I'm sure by HALF WAY THROUGH the game I would have been able to use the controls. But that isn't good game design. Good games are fun when you start playing them, and when you finish playing them.

I didn't like that while I was still trying to figure out how to play the game while tip toeing around people with weapons. I was sent into a seemingly endless stream of baddies in a small town. Where the only way to figgure out what to do, was to run past them all and run blindly into alleys and backways, only to come to a fence I couldn't open, and then to be beat to death by the mob. Fight em all? I ran out of ammo and was slowly mauled to death by them. Try running a different way? Find a button to press? This? That?

I remembered from my limited play, and extensive watching of others play the other games, that a big part of the prior games was the same. Adventure game fetch quest puzzles, with all the normal 'down time' filled with zombies.

I assumed the game went on to make me die a lot, I don't find that fun, so I stopped playing.

I'm sure it had great moments. The one it lead off with was craptastic. It couldn't have even been the 3rd save. I'm thinking it was the second. There was that house you start at, then running through to the center of the town. That's where I got to, thats where I spent several times going through, and that's where I stopped playing.

It has all the control problems of "50 Cent: Bullet Proof"

Ah yes that town - it was cool. They just decided to throw you in the thick of it for a laugh so you got the feel of what the game had in store. After that the game was more like picking off a few enemies and exploring for a while until the next big horde.

Anyway, in the village you could go inside and block the windows and doors and go upstairs and snipe, there's even a tower you can climb, so it was about using the terrain not running into blind alleys ;-). Having said that, yes I ran out of ammo and resorted to the knife and then suddenly when I was desperate they all ran off to the church, it was cool and a relief. I didn't find the shotgun until after they had all gone, bummer as that would have been fun. I don't get killed that many times as it's not too hard, which is good, and also I don't mind playing bits again as it's just such good fun - normally I'd hate that.

> The one it lead off with was craptastic.

I thought the game started off brilliantly and maintained a constant and gripping pace of action throughout.

You've every right to not like the game, but after reading all your posts, we get the idea, you don't like the game, you've never liked any Resident Evil games. So you can stop going out of your way to overly hate the game, because you won't be able to take away anything from the game or for those that like it.

Oh I remember my first experiences in that first town. I saw that church bell tower and thought "Heey, only one
ladder up, I can snipe and knife those bastards as they climb up to get me!

Yeah, I killed about 4 of them before they stopped climbing up the ladder. I was puzzled. Then all of a sudden BOOM -
I was badly hurt by an explosion. They had tossed a grenade up there. Haha! Whoops! They ain't so dumb after all. I
was forced to climb down with minimal health and be mauled by them.

Finding a house to baracade yourself in is the most effective and fun way to do it(there are a couple you can use)

It should have done something to give you a little direction. It appeared to be an endless stream of bad guys. Which is a very common, although dirty, trick. So I acted accordingly. A single 'thought to myself' would have cleared up the confusion. "Man, look at them all. I guess I have no choice but to mow them all down." would have done wonders.

I don't want to take anything away from you all that like it. I want to understand why you like it.

It is a mystery to me, even the critics who I am normally very in line with loved it. And it just wasn't in sync with my expirence.

Critics that have made fun of all survival horror games for years and years.

Oh, a game that DampeS8N thinks is poorly designed. Now I really can't wait to play it. :o>

Did you like the other REs FD? If so, you'll like RE4. The only 'iffy' bit is if you don't typically like console fps/tps, and such.

If all it takes is for me not to like it. Check out these fantasticly bad titles.

50 Cent: Bullet Proof
Beyblade (on the ps1)
Dragon Ball Z: SAGA
Catwoman

Actually RE4 is not much like the other RE games at all, it just rocks.

It's... Not so much that it is like other RE games, but that no one who likes the other RE games dislikes RE4, because it is soooo much better, and keeps what was good about them.

but like I said... you can make the subway run on time, but it'll still smell like urine.

Fantastic game. I beat it many times on normal but I can't get past the barn boss on hard. I was told that after beating the game, you get access to the infinite rocket launcher and the typewriter assault rifle. After beating the game 3 times in normal I finally got enough cash to buy the rocket launcher, but I never ever saw the typewriter on the list? What's the deal there? I swear I never saw the typewriter on the dealers list of wares. I'm playing the GC version.

Look. I'm sure the game 'got better'.

No the game never "gets better". It was great from the begining to the end.

I was sent into a seemingly endless stream of baddies in a small town. Where the only way to figgure out what to do, was to run past them all and run blindly into alleys and backways, only to come to a fence I couldn't open, and then to be beat to death by the mob. heh, Thats exactly what they want you to think. You're suppose to get that feeling of confusion, dread, and hopelessness. Thats what makes the game so great. So if you got stuck going one way, how about try going another way? Or doing something different? RE4 was one of the most straightforward games I've ever played. Theres very little "figuring this out" instances in the game - actually theres a few but not till way later on. If you have trouble with these type of games, then logically you would hate the Zelda games then because thats pratically 90% of what the game is - figuring stuff out to move on.

But incase you're wondering, the point of that particular area was to basically survive for as long as possible. After a certain amount of time, the church bell rings and they all leave. Theres even a cutscene with your character being confused about the situation, thus introducing the title and tone for this game. The enemies in the game will try to overrun you. I can assure that everyone who first got there had no clue what to do except fight for their life. It was simple, yet great...and many many more memorable scenes to encounter later on.

It's... Not so much that it is like other RE games, but that no one who likes the other RE games dislikes RE4, because it is soooo much better, and keeps what was good about them.
Good point.

Po: I haven't even finished it once yet so I can't say :-) A good ole Internet search ought to reveal and answer for you though...

The difference, for me, is that when you play a zelda game, it starts by leading you around for a bit. It might start open ended, but they TOLD you what to do. If you choose to go pull weeds instead, that's your wasted time.

In this case. It wasn't ONE thing that put me off. It was the combination of, A Not being able to move my character around too well yet; B Not having a clue what to do; C When I did die, I was sent back to or near to the save, and had to waste time coming back down the hill. Killing the same 4 guys over and over, knowing where they were going to jump out; and finally D getting negatice reinforcement on trying to kill them in the first place, I killed a good 5-6 of them from far away with my gun, ran out of ammo and tried to kill some with my knife, and died. I repeated that and was killed again, so I then tried to find a way 'around them' and will all the options, that seemed like the most logical course. So from then on, that is what I focused on.. When I realized I'd wasted over an hour being annoyed and bored, I sent the game back.

I don't think that's unreasonable. And you all can call being confused, annoyed, and not enjoying yourself, 'fun', but I do not.

In zelda. You might not know what you are supposed to do exactly, but you always 'sorta' know what to do. You have a general idea. Either someone told you to head to some location, and you are heading in that direction (and the good level design leads you in the right path) Or, like in a dungeon, you KNOW what you need, you just don't know where to get it. It isn't going in without a clue, it is going in without a clear vision. Might be a key to a door, or an area on your map you aren't sure how to get to. Point is, you have limited good options, and ruling them out doesn't take much effort. Additionally, the combat is normally fun, or fun enough in some cases. Which I didn't feel about RE4, mainly cause I wasn't used to the controls.

this RE4 church bell thing doesn't give you a clue. So not making sure I knew to try to outlast them, I was lead astray by what I figured was supposed to be an endless stream of baddies that I would have to dodge. I had the right idea, in that I wasn't going to just kill a few and casually move forward. I was ready for that. I thought It was about WHERE I went that mattered, not how long I was in the area.

I think that is a critical oversight, one that was made worse by the level design giving me the impression that I needed to go somewhere. Normally an 'arena' fight is in an open space.

Like I said... This is all fixable with a single 'thought to myself' moment for my character. Not having that is just bad design.

If it is the only instance of bad design in the whole game, that's great. It was in the worst possible place for it though. Right up front where it would make a bad first impression.

Also. What I liked about Zelda OoT was that it entirely lacked this kind of figgure it out on your own design. With the exception of the water temple, which was hard because the whole 3D maze thing was really tough for people. After I played it 4 or 5 times, I realized exactly why. The people making it knew it too well. If you know how it works well enough it is the easiest of the dungeons to get through. Straight forward, in one cycle, it is easy. It is a pain if you get outta sync with the water levels. Then you start to think toooo out of the box and that's what got people in trouble.

Outside that minor issue, the entire game was a string of 'you are in this room, everything you need is here, figger it out.' all the integral exploration was controled, all the side exploration was completely open.

What I saw in RE4 was that ALL the exploration was open, and I was left to have to figger out what the developers made opperable and what they didn't... Can I break this window? that one? that one? ooooh That one.

I don't think that's unreasonable. And you all can call being confused, annoyed, and not enjoying yourself, 'fun', but I do not.

Or maybe you just totally suck at it :). That game is so ammo friendly that its almost ridiculous.

In zelda. You might not know what you are supposed to do exactly, but you always 'sorta' know what to do. You have a general idea.

And you didn't "sorta" know what to do in RE4? For the first half of the game, you're constantly in communications with that girl who instructs you of where to go and what to do. You even have a map of what gates/doorway are unlocked and whats nots at all times. You even pick up these cheesy "notes" from other characters detailing the plots, goals, and what to to expect - now THAT was bad design, making it too easy and convient to figure out. Other than that, it couldn't have been anymore straightforward.

As for the Zelda games, 70% of the time I'm running around saying "what the hell did I miss now?". Now I don't consider stuff like that "fun" because I suck at games that require me to "find something, but before I find that I have to find something else, then something else, etc.. before I can continue on". Did not have that issue whatsoever with RE4. Previous RE games I did however...

but I never ever saw the typewriter on the list? What's the deal there? I swear I never saw the typewriter on the dealers list of wares. I'm playing the GC version

You have to beat the Mercenaries games with all 4 characters first. Its tough as hell and I've still havent got it. BTW, that "chicago typewriter" is actually another name for a Thompson Machine Gun. Not sure if its really worth the effort though...

Yeah RE4 is actually a linear game, you don't really make any choices. I wouldn't say it's totally ammo friendly but I haven't totally run out ever. When I get low I just use the Punisher (lol, great name) and then run in and stab them when they are on the ground.

Basically DampeS8N, what you call bad design others think is good design so it's just that you didn't like the game and how it introduced you to the action, which is fair enough. Maybe you look for too much in your games like some people do with movies and then they don't enjoy them?

Picked up a copy of RE4 for my gamecube... now just gotta wait till the kids are in bed to fire it up (;-).... Extended easter hols -bliss... I will try and limit myself to an hour tops - if possible.

HAHA, you'll NEVER play it for just one hour. Once you start you can't stop. Enjoy! This is one purchase you won't regret, but your wife might ...

I only look for too much from a game people call "one of the gest games ever"

my wifes an even bigger house of the dead fan than me ! (;-), right played it, didn't get on it till gone midnight, Have never played a REvil game before, it's definitely not one for the kids. Can't say I've played a game with so much forboding in it.... the cut scenes really add to the atmosphere.

Yeah it could have done with a Strafe control.

That sentiment is so wrong that it borders on criminal -- it's the limitations that generate the tension. Get a grip!

I can't comprehend how anyone can not enjoy RE4, but DampeS8N need not feel too bad about putting in a rubbish performance in the village -- this dude from Capcom isn't that good at it either.

Heh, the first time I was in that village, I didn't even go into the house but rather ran around taking quick shots at everyone until the church bell rang. I didnt even knew that there was a shotgun in one of the houses until I played it the second time around. I actually bought my first shotgun from the merchant. Needless to say, it was a crazy to start this great game...

Yeah. Obviously it was MY fault I didn't enjoy playing the game. After all, games are only really enjoyable if you are good at them.

That's what is trash.

Damp, Damp, Damp....no one is blaming you for sucking badly at a great game. Cheer up :) Now that you've gotten some new insights on your first village issues, when the Wii version comes out, give it another go. And if you still don't like it then, then perhaps, there truly is someone in the world who doesn't like RE4.

Nice tip about the shot gun, I was wondering after my first visit to the village how the hell you can take on so many zombos.

I was being facetious.

I will likely give it another go on the wii. I'll wait for a review tho. They -could- botch the wii version and make it even harder to control... You know.. Give it a Farcry makeover.

haha that video is funny. My first visit to the village wasn't as exciting as I didn't run around much I just took a load of them out and then I went in a house but didn't go in the shotgun house. Also the video guy is a HUGE AMMO WASTER, you can use the knife on boxes and crates and also he shoots in the chest instead of head sometimes, but good use of leg shots and kicking which I didn't start doing until later in the game.

They -could- botch the wii version and make it even harder to control

Hope not. Its already bad enough they screwed up the PC version. After playing some Red Steel, I think the controls would be fine though on the Wii, considering how hard it is to aim already with regular controls.

Also the video guy is a HUGE AMMO WASTER, you can use the knife on boxes and crates and also he shoots in the chest instead of head sometimes, but good use of leg shots and kicking which I didn't start doing until later in the game.

Actually before I figured out I could knife the crates, I use to shoot at them too. The tough thing about this game is that its sometimes hard to get head shots especially when they're charging towards you. And when ever you do, it doesn't always take them down. Its kinda weird how when you destroy their heads, sometimes they're still walking towards you. One of them even attacked me while headless! Probably a glitch though...

it's not a glitch haha it's just supposed to be scarey. The later on you get the longer the last without their heads as they are supposed to be virus controlled after all so the heads don't matter quite as much ;-)

Yeah those virus-controlled guys still attack you when you destroy the heads, thats actually part of the game later on. But I'm talking about odd occurances when you destroy the head and they're still moving towards you in which they will fall and die shortly after, BUT in certain cases they actually attack you as if they still have a head attached on! Thats what caught me by surprise...cause i was assuming they were just going to dropped dead in front of me. And this was early on before they started doing the virus thing. Pretty frickin weird.....its got to be glitch :(

Here is my bullet-proof strategy for the village:
At the start, just go straight and a little right into a small one level house. It has a single entrance and no windows. Block the door with the cabinet, and blow one or two holes in the door with your pistol. You can now see the baddies creeping up towards the door. Everytime they try hit the door open, just keep shooting them in the head. Once you run out of pistol ammo, go to the corner between the cabinet and the door and knife them. They can only approach you single file, so you can knife the rest of them like that. After the bell rings take your time to collect ammo and items like the shotgun. If it's done well, you won't lose any health at all.

@po, you can move cabinets ? Whilst the kids were in the garden I'd RE4 on (with the living room door shut, poised to hit the 'pause' button - this is def NOT a game for the kids).

This game actually made me jump when a zombo appeared unexpectedly - I can't recall the last time I jumped when a 'zomby ' appeared when not expecting it, I can see this game has some depth.

Yes you can move select cabinets and shelves. The ones you can move look kind of obvious. Move up beside a cabinet and if you can move it, it'll say "A - Move" or something.

I take it you saw the lady with the pitchfork stuck to her head? :p

Geez she scared me the first time.

But po that approach, whilst sensible is boring :-) The fun way is to run around screaming shooting things and jumping off roofs :-)
