Are there any good alternatives to downloading the huge 27mb Adobe Reader just to read pdf files?

You could try buying a mag with a cover CD/DVD - most of them tend to have adobe PDF reader on them. At least they used to. Havent bought a mag in ages.

Yes big10p, it's really that big. For a reader. Ridiculous.

Downloading Foxit Reader, looks good.
It`s not that the file is to big to download, I have broadband, it`s just if the filesize is that bloated to me I get the impression that the program is too for what it does. Maybe I`m wrong?

Remember : 27mb is the size of the compressed bundle. Decompressed, it could be twice that size, or worse.
Foxit is under 4mb decompressed - and there's nothing I'm missing from Adobe's reader either. It even looks similar. 23mb is a -lot- of bloat to have lurking on your system - seriously, how do they even manage such a feat?

Playing devil's advocate for a second, just keep in the back of your mind that Foxit Reader doesn't render and/or print every pdf "properly" (ie, as it's rendered in Adobe products).

In defence of adobe, the latest acrobat seems pretty quick to load PDFs and you can choose not to download the photoshop album thingy which knocks off about 7MB.
The latest Acrobat Reader is quick to load PDF's because it loads most of itself into RAM as soon as Windows starts.

Not for me it doesn't, I disabled that.
Despite your defenses, there's still a good extra 16mb+ of bloat going on there.

I remember reading a paper on how Acrobat Reader doesn't implement the PDF specification to the letter either. While rare, it can have issues with some PDF files as well. Can't seem to find the link anymore, though.
One may or may not notice rendering issues. I'm just saying that if you do, you heard it here first, and it's not just you.
I still use Foxit - I just keep Acrobat installed somewhere (Reader 7 at the moment) just in case.
