Touch Screens

I saw these videos and it made me want to try a touchscreen with OS gesture controls really badly, trouble is no-one seems to sell touchscreens near me :/

This is very impressive with some gesture controls, a touchscreen & xgl/gnome on linux:

This is vista with a touch screen feature, It looks a bit fiddily and is about as fluid as uranium. However it has got a good idea for getting in corners:

I think i would need a mouse too for longer that 5 minutes(armache) but it would be great on a tablet or if you were standing and just wanted to check email or look something up on internet.

the vista one looks very good. however the 3D desktops on that linux instal look sick. if I could have that 3D with the vista mouse, man that would be cool..

Too bad those touch screens are so bloody expensive :(

I got my hands on one for £30 once because they didn't know it was Touchscreen, and labeled it generic.

I nabbed it. It was pretty awesome as I could tweak controls in my sequencer with my fingers. :D

I saw the clip and decided to give Beryl a go.. its quite cool... finally Linux is making some use of the 256Mb NVidia card I gave it.

Its nice that you can just run it / quit it easily... when it gets on my nerves I can quit it.. and when guests come round I can re-run it :)

yeah, i got it working last night on feisty (ubuntu 7.x). Im well impressed! you can as you say start it and stop it as you want to and it seems to cleanly remove it and return to the default Xwindows settings.

I think vista gui has just been outdated big time.
The reason im saying this is it runs very smoothly on my Celeron pc with old Geforce mx440 and 256Mb ram, and STILL the apps are smooth :}

The only problem I have with it is that Ive seen many demo's where they drag/squash a side/corner right back to reveal whats underneath... I cant think of a use for this feature but I wish I could work out what I need to do to achive it just to impress the visitors ! lol
Touchscreen would be fun but for the price Id prefer a higher screen resolution.
And whats with these widescreen monitors.. why can they be rotated 90 degrees as standard. When Im coding I would much prefer to be able to see more lines of code.

Touchscreens are nice, but only for limited applications -- one big problem is that for extended use, you will wear down the protective film on the screen very quickly. spots that are hit often will start looking dull, and before long you'll have a hard time even seeing the screen under 'em.

The protective layer generally isn't replaceble, and if you use an aftermarket 3rd party protector it will be both hard to get on straight, and slightly affect the crispnes sof the image thanks to the additional layer of plastic.

In addition to the wear&tear of touching the screen over extended use, you also have the immediate issue of fingerprints and grease over your screen.

You can mitigate that by using a stylus, but those are very easy to lose on your average computer desk... And it's yet another 'controller' to reach for, interupting your workflow. :-?

There are so many touch screens around now in phones/pocket pc, pocket games consoles.. all have the same problem of greasy prints and fat fingers missing the target... how long before you can have a stylus tip surgically implanted on the tip of a finger ?

Simply dont add beryl-manager to the sessions start list.
Then when you want it, simply tyoe 'beryl-manager' into term, (or make an icon)
When beryl is running you can right click on the diamond in taskmonitor and choose which system will render the desktop. (gnome/compis/beryl) without having to restart the Xserver :)

I tend to run it by default then simply fast-switch to gnome desktop(using method above) on the rare occasions i need to have more GL power (ie when using blender etc)
